Dynamically Actuated Reconfigurable Topographical Surface Enables Active Control of Implant‐Associated Infections

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A dynamically actuated reconfigurable topographical surface (DARTS) integrates contact‐mediated bactericidal nanotopography with programmable mechanical actuation to actively disrupt bacterial biofilms. Dynamic surface reconfiguration enhances bacterial killing and suppresses implant‐associated infections in vivo, providing a new strategy for active ...

The distribution of N-grams

open access: yes, 1999
N-grams are generalized words consisting of N consecutive symbols, as they are used in a text. This paper determines the rank-frequency distribution for redundant N-grams. For entire texts this is known to be Zipf's law (i.e.

Dual‐Layer Conducting and Redox Polymer Bioanodes for Synergistic Enhancement of Microbial Extracellular Electron Transfer

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A hybrid PEDOT/Fc‐LPEI conducting/redox polymer bioanode synergistically improves microbial extracellular electron transfer (EET) in Shewanella oneidensis MR‐1. The dual‐layer interface delivers 18‐fold higher current output and 27‐fold greater charge collected than bare carbon felt, highlighting an effective strategy for high‐performance ...

Effectiveness of Methods for Syntactic and Semantic Recognition of Numeral Strings: Tradeoffs Between Number of Features and Length of Word N-Grams

open access: yes, 2007
This paper describes and compares the use of methods based on Ngrams(specifically trigrams and pentagrams), together with five features, to recognise the syntactic and semantic categories of numeral strings representing money, number, date, etc., in ...

Advancing SafeWax, A Bio‐Inspired Superhydrophobic Coating, Toward Sustainable and Climate‐Resilient Crop Protection

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study advances SafeWax, a bio‐inspired, fatty‐acids‐based superhydrophobic coating, by identifying an agriculturally compliant solvent and revealing how solvent‐controlled Fatty acid crystallization governs the coating's microscopic structure and performance.

Using n-grams to identify time periods of cultural influence

open access: yes, 2012
An author's literary style is influenced by the cultural time period in which the author lives. The author's ideas, and the words chosen to express them, can help identify the cultural time period that most influenced the author.

Anisotropic Phonon Dynamics and Directional Transport in Actinide Van der Waals Semiconductor Uranium Triselenide

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
USe3 is introduced as an actinide van der Waals semiconductor that mirrors the quasi‐one‐dimensional physics of transition‐metal trichalcogenides. Polarization‐resolved Raman spectroscopy on exfoliated flakes maps strong in‐plane phonon anisotropy and strain‐tunable mode shifts.

Melanin's Role in Balancing Mechanical Strength and Reproductive Output in Environmentally Stressed Fungal Spores

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Melanin content directly controls fungal spore mechanical properties, with pigmented spores achieving rupture forces two orders of magnitude higher than hyaline spores. Environmental stress drives this quantity‐quality tradeoff; stressed species invest energy in melanin‐reinforced, mechanically superior thick‐walled, super‐hydrophobic spores, while ...

Hydrogel‐Based 3D‐Printed Anthropomorphic Breast Phantom for Emulating Mechanical and Dielectric Properties of Mammary Tissue. Applications in Microwave Imaging

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A 3D‐printable breast phantom is developed using patient‐derived MRI data and hydrogels that replicate the dielectric properties of healthy and cancerous tissues. Mechanical and dielectric characterization confirm its suitability for microwave imaging.
