Text Classification using String Kernels

open access: yes, 2002
We propose a novel approach for categorizing text documents based on the use of a special kernel. The kernel is an inner product in the feature space generated by all subsequences of length k.

Geometrical-based algorithm for variational segmentation and smoothing of vector-valued images

open access: yes, 2007
An optimisation method based on a nonlinear functional is considered for segmentation and smoothing of vector-valued images. An edge-based approach is proposed to initially segment the image using geometrical properties such as metric tensor of the ...

Support Vector Machine Classifier for Accurate Identification of piRNA

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2018
Piwi-interacting RNA (piRNA) is a newly identified class of small non-coding RNAs. It can combine with PIWI proteins to regulate the transcriptional gene silencing process, heterochromatin modifications, and to maintain germline and stem cell function in

Identifying and characterising a plant GH1 β‐glucosidase that exhibits hydrolytic activity on N‐linked glucopyranoside

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We report the first β‐glucosidase with demonstrated hydrolytic activity on an N‐linked glycopyranoside. The enzyme, native to maize, was biochemically characterised for this novel reaction, and structural modelling of the enzyme–substrate complex revealed several clues to the underlying reduced catalytic rate relative to its native O‐glycopyranoside ...

Reliability analysis for a k/n(F) system with repairable repair-equipment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In this paper, the reliability and replacement policy of a k/n(F) (i.e. k-out- of-n: F) system with repairable repair-equipment is analyzed. We assume that both the working and repair times of all components in the system and the repair-equipment follow ...

Structural studies and functional engineering of NanX: an anhydro‐sialic acid transporter from Escherichia coli

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Biophysical characterisation shows that NanX, a membrane transport protein from the major facilitator superfamily (MFS), forms both monomers and dimers after purification. AlphaFold modelling and substrate docking provide information on residues likely involved in substrate recognition for NanX and another MFS member, NanT.

In silico and in vitro exploration of a tyrosinase for biocatalytic production of catechols

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Tyrosinase from Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum is a promising biocatalyst for producing valuable catechols from monophenol substrates. This tyrosinase is uniquely suited to this due to its high monophenolase : diphenolase ratio. We combined in silico docking and in vivo kinetic characterisation of this tyrosinase with 11 industrially relevant monophenols,

ML-based electromyography signal analysis for assessing rehabilitation exercise execution quality

open access: yesScientific Reports
Following lower limb trauma, performing orthopaedic rehabilitation exercises is a crucial factor in successful recovery. However, many patients find it difficult to execute these movements with optimal biomechanical form.

Sim-Heuristic Approach for Solving Discrete Optimization Problems with Stochastic Constraints

open access: yesMathematics
Discrete optimization problems with stochastic constraints (DOPSC) are discrete optimization problems that involve constraints defined by stochastic processes. Solving DOPSC is highly time-consuming, as the number of combinations grows exponentially with
