Towards Tight Lower Bounds for Range Reporting on the RAM [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
In the orthogonal range reporting problem, we are to preprocess a set of $n$ points with integer coordinates on a $U \times U$ grid. The goal is to support reporting all $k$ points inside an axis-aligned query rectangle.

Negative concord and (multiple) agree: a case study of West Flemish [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
This paper examines the formalization of negative concord in terms of the Minimalist Program, focusing entirely on negative concord in West Flemish. It is shown that a recent analysis of negative concord which advocates Multiple Agree is empirically ...

On universal partial words [PDF]

open access: yesDiscrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, 2017
A universal word for a finite alphabet $A$ and some integer $n\geq 1$ is a word over $A$ such that every word in $A^n$ appears exactly once as a subword (cyclically or linearly).

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Length limited coding and optimal height-limited binary trees [PDF]

open access: yes, 1988
A new O(nL)-time algorithm is given for finding an optimal prefix-free binary code for a weighted alphabet of size n, with the restriction that no code string be longer than L.

Revisiting Mission‐Oriented Cancer Research to tackle the increasing burden of cancer in Europe–a policy perspective

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Translational cancer research and its implementation through competitively selected Comprehensive Cancer Centers across Europe should be the primary policy focus for addressing the increasing cancer burden in Europe and counteract the present main strategy to convert cancer to a chronic disease.

Indefinites, negation and Jespersen's Cycle in the history of Low German [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This paper offers a formal account of the diachronic changes in the interaction between indefinites in the scope of negation and the expression of sentential negation in the history of Low German.

Why human connection is the true metric of research success

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Human‐centred mentorship can be shaped by mentor attributes, actions, intrinsic drive and career ambition. Drawing on reflections across Singapore and France, as well as workshop insights from FEBS‐IUBMB ENABLE 2024, this article shows that human‐centred mentorship creates the conditions for sustainable growth, well‐being and retention in research ...

Orthogonal Range Reporting and Rectangle Stabbing for Fat Rectangles

open access: yes, 2019
In this paper we study two geometric data structure problems in the special case when input objects or queries are fat rectangles. We show that in this case a significant improvement compared to the general case can be achieved.

Faster Sparse Suffix Sorting [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The sparse suffix sorting problem is to sort b=o(n) arbitrary suffixes of a string of length n using o(n) words of space in addition to the string. We present an O(n) time Monte Carlo algorithm using O(b.log(b)) space and an O(n.log(b)) time Las Vegas ...
