Introduction: The Economics of Lordship in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe

open access: yesJahrbuch für Wirtschaftsgeschichte
This special issue focuses on the economics of lordship in pre-industrial Europe. In the introduction, we start by briefly defining lordship, focusing on both the economic power lords had to demand rents from their tenants and the political power lords ...

Innate lymphoid cells responding to IL-33 mediate airway-hyperreactivity independent of adaptive immunity

open access: yesJournal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 2011
Background Asthma has been considered an immunological disease mediated by Th2 cells and adaptive immunity. However, clinical and experimental observations suggest that additional pathways may regulate asthma, particularly in non-allergic forms of asthma,

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

The Mortality Impact of Cholera in Germany

open access: yesJahrbuch für Wirtschaftsgeschichte
This paper presents the first comprehensive quantitative account of epidemic cholera in 19th-century Germany. Using a new dataset based on archival sources, it documents nearly half a million cholera deaths, along with outbreak timing and population at ...

IL-33 induces protective effects in adipose tissue inflammation during obesity in mice

open access: yesCirculation Research, 2010
Rationale: Chronic low-grade inflammation involving adipose tissue likely contributes to the metabolic consequences of obesity. The cytokine interleukin (IL)-33 and its receptor ST2 are expressed in adipose tissue, but their role in adipose tissue ...

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.
