Chemotaxis by Naegleria fowleri for bacteria.
The Journal of protozoology, 1987Naegleria fowleri amebae demonstrated a chemotactic and chemokinetic response toward live cells and extracts of Escherichia coli and other bacterial species when experiments were performed using a blind-well chemotaxis chamber. The peptide N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine acted as a chemokinetic rather than a chemotactic factor for N.

Serology of Naegleria fowleri and Naegleria lovaniensis in a hospital survey.
The Journal of protozoology, 1987An avidin-biotin horseradish peroxidase method was used to detect antibodies to Naegleria fowleri and N. lovaniensis in human serum samples. Antibodies were detected in 101 specimens from 115 hospital patients ranging in age from 15 to 98 years. Class-specific anti-immunoglobulins identified antibodies as IgG and IgM.

Differences in virulence of Naegleria fowleri.
Pathologie-biologie, 1980All pathogenic Naegleria fowleri isolated from the environment were highly virulent to mice when instilled intranasally. Axenic cultivation gradually decreased virulence of highly virulent strains. This decrease was most pronounced in environmental isolates and of minor importance in N. fowleri isolated from human cerebrospinal fluid.
