The nail is a subject of global importance for dermatologists, podiatrists and surgeons. Nail avulsion is a frequently undertaken, yet simple, intriguing procedure. It may either be surgical or chemical, using 40% urea. The former is most often undertaken using the distal approach.

Retronychia should be suspected in patients presenting with painful proximal nail fold inflammation of the great toe, particularly when nail growth has slowed or ceased. Early recognition prevents misdiagnosis as paronychia or onychomycosis.

Among the therapeutic possibilities for onychomycosis, chemicalnail avulsion is a logical approach to the eradication of the pathogen.A new formulation was used as a nail lacquer containing 40% urea in a film-forming solution in 10 patients presenting with onychomycosis.
