Paleoenvironmental Stasis for the Bioturbating Community During the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum at the Southern Iberian Margin. [PDF]

open access: yesGeobiology
ABSTRACT During the Paleocene‐Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), there was an increase in global temperatures and emissions of isotopically depleted carbon, resulting in a negative carbon isotope excursion (CIE). This climatic event caused a widespread ocean deoxygenation, leading to substantial biotic turnover.

Helicosphaera carteri (Prymnesiophyceae) under high carbon dioxide: An experimental study. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Phycol
Abstract The coccolithophore Helicosphaera carteri is an understudied, yet ecologically and biogeochemically important, marine calcifier. Hence, its response to ocean acidification has implications for ecosystem function and the marine carbon cycle. Here we employed dilute batch cultures featuring a coupled C‐system manipulation (295, 444, and 600 μatm

Calcareous nannoplankton of the Red Sea

open access: yes, 2008
The objective of this thesis is to understand the calcareous nannoplankton response to past environmental changes in the northern Red Sea over the last 60,000 years. Calcareous nannoplankton findings, supplemented by geochemical and sedimentological data, were compared with other marine and terrestrial proxy records and discussed with respect to the ...

Slimehead Size Through Time: Testing the Temperature-Size Relationship in Late Cretaceous Trachichthyidae. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
In this study, we use the extensive fossil record of the extinct Late Cretaceous Trachichthyid fish genus, Hoplopteryx, from the British Chalk Group to explore how this family responded to past climate change events. Our study is the first to demonstrate that seawater palaeotemperature, estimated from oxygen stable isotope values, is a significant ...

Almost billfish: convergent longirostry, micro-dentition, and possible glandular sinuses in a large teleost fish from the Upper Cretaceous of Northern Italy. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Anat
A fossil rostrum fragment of a large teleost fish from the Upper Cretaceous of Northern Italy reveals remarkable anatomical convergences with Cenozoic and Recent billfishes (marlins, swordfishes, and akin). The extinct group Plethodidae independently acquired a long snout, micro‐teeth, and oil‐gland sinuses well before the evolution of true billfishes.

Global Warming and Mass Extinctions Associated With Large Igneous Province Volcanism

open access: yesGeophysical Monograph Series, Page 83-102., 2021

Exploring the links between Large Igneous Provinces and dramatic environmental impact

An emerging consensus suggests that Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) and Silicic LIPs (SLIPs) are a significant driver of dramatic global environmental and biological changes, including mass extinctions.

Spermatophyta Molecular Clock: Time Drift and Recent Acceleration. [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Environ Interact
Exponential increase in the base substitution rate in recent geologic time. ABSTRACT Angiospermae radiation is widely recognized as a mid‐Cretaceous event, but the adaptive radiation of Asarum and Viola as spring ephemerals also occurred during the Quaternary. To better understand the evolution of Angiospermae through geological time, a robust and well‐

Biostratigraphy of Cretaceous calcareous nannoplankton

open access: yes, 2007
The stratigraphical distribution of selected species of calcareous nannoplankton from sections of Cretaceous deposits in Tunisia, France, The Netherlands, West Germany, Great Britain, Denmark, Turkey, Oman and New Jersey was studied. A number of Late Cretaceous lineages was recognised, on which a proposal for a revised zonation is based.

Nannoplankton as indicators of climatic variability in the Upper Pliocene

open access: yes, 2011
Discoasters are the remains of an enigmatic group of nannoplankton, whose last representatives disappeared globally at 1.89 Ma. The one million years prior to their extinction has been analysed in high time resolution and a global database has been ...

Quantification of the Eocene–Oligocene transition in the Zagros Foreland Basin: Palaeogeographic control on sequence architecture and tectonic signal preservation

open access: yesThe Depositional Record, Volume 12, Issue 3, June 2026.
New bio‐sequence framework for the Eocene–Oligocene transition in Zagros. Geochemical data validate basin depth control on SB1 vs. SB2 boundaries. SEM‐EDS analyses confirm subaerial exposure versus continuous deposition. Sensitivity analysis quantifies sub‐10% uncertainty in stratigraphic interpretations. Resolves the Pyrenean orogeny's variable impact
