Response of Viral Shells under Nano-Indentation

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2009
Viral capsids are self assembled nano-containers with remarkable material properties. They combine extreme simplicity of construction with both, toughness and resilience protecting the viral genome, and with complex functionality that the virus needs for targeting and infecting new host cells.

Does silica concentration and phytolith ultrastructure relate to phytolith hardness?

open access: yesBiosurface and Biotribology, 2017
Grasses are an important part of the forage of many herbivorous mammals and their phytoliths have long been regarded as the most important agent of tooth wear. Recent work has challenged this “paradigm” in finding evidence 1.

On the Mechanics and Physics in the Nano-Indentation of Silicon Monocrystals.

open access: yesJSME International Journal Series A, 1999
This paper aims to investigate some fundamental problems of mechanics and physics in the nano-indentation of silicon monocrystals with the aid of molecular dynamics analysis. The study showed that inelastic deformation of silicon monocrystals is solely caused by amorphous phase transformation.

Scratch hardness of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings deposited by closed-field unbalanced magnetron sputtering

open access: yesAIP Advances
Thin coatings are subject to scratch and wear damage in tribological applications. Scratch hardness numbers are used to evaluate scratch and abrasive wear resistance.

The Ni3Al/Ni Interfacial Contribution to the Indentation Size Effect of Ni-Based Single-Crystal Superalloys

open access: yesSolids
Hardness decreases as indentation depth increases at both the nano- and micro-meter scales. By incorporating interfacial contributions, the indentation size effect can provide valuable information on the deformation behaviors of Ni-based single-crystal ...

Investigation of in-plane visco-deformation in PMMA indentation via TLV model calibrated with tensile specimens

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
Time-dependent in-plane deformation in PMMA indentation is investigated via two-layer visco-plasticity model (TLV). The parameters of TLV model for PMMA were calibrated for tensile specimens using finite element analysis (FEA) and an optimization ...
