Viscous Water Meniscus under Nanoconfinement

Physical Review Letters, 2006
A dramatic transition in the mechanical properties of water is observed at the nanometer scale. For a water meniscus formed between two hydrophilic surfaces in the attractive region, with < or = 1 nm interfacial separation, the measured viscosity is 7 orders of magnitude greater than that of bulk water at room temperature.

Control of Swelling of Responsive Nanogels by Nanoconfinement

Small, 2012
AbstractThe volume phase transition (VPT) behavior and the swelling properties of individual thermoresponsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)‐based nanogels are investigated by in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). Using a template‐based synthesis method, cylindrical nanogels are synthesized for different polymerization times within nanopores (80

Uniaxial Alignment of Nanoconfined Columnar Mesophases

Nano Letters, 2007
By confining discotic phthalocyanines in a network of crisscrossed nanogrooves, we obtain a uniaxial alignment of the columnar mesophase. The alignment process is based on the anisotropy of interface tension between the mesophase and the nanogrooves' walls.

Ultralow Percolation Threshold in Nanoconfined Domains

ACS Nano, 2017
Self-assembled percolated networks play an important role in many advanced electronic materials and devices. In nanocarbon composites, decreasing the percolation threshold ϕc is of paramount importance to reduce nanotube bundling, minimize material resources and costs, and enhance charge transport.

Intramolecular and Intermolecular Rearrangements in Nanoconfined Polystyrene

Macromolecules, 2007
Vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy reveals an intramolecular rearrangement involving a change in 'physical dimers' of adjacent pendant benzene rings of atactic polystyrene (aPS) from 'oblique' to 'head-to-tail' (ht) configuration in aPS films spin coated on fused quartz, as film thickness R goes below 4R(g) (R-g = unperturbed polystyrene gyration radius ...

Nanoconfinement effects in energy storage materials

Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics, 2011
Nanoconfinement effects have been studied to understand and to modify thermodynamic and kinetic properties of energy storage materials and to improve their cyclic behaviour. The paper addresses various aspects in the research and development of hydrogen storage materials and batteries.
