Multiple Twinning in Nacre and Aragonite
Electron backscatter diffraction map of a cluster of geologic aragonite, exhibiting single, double, and triple twins. The whole cluster is approximately 2 cm wide. Colors indicate crystal orientations, so that pixels where the a‐, b‐, and c‐axis is perpendicular to the image plane are green, red, and blue, respectively.

Anomalous Stiffening of a Conjugated Polymer During Electrochemical Oxidation
The electromechanical response of a thienothiophene‐based conjugated polymer with triethylene glycol side chains is investigated. Electrochemical nanoindentation and atomic force microscopy reveal a modest and reversible increase in elastic modulus at room temperature upon electrochemical oxidation.

Nanocomposite NiO:Au hydrogen sensors with high sensitivity and low operating temperature
We present results on the development of nanocomposite NiO:Au thin-film hydrogen sensors, which are able to detect hydrogen concentrations as low as 2 ppm in air, operating at low temperatures in the range 125-150C.

Atomistic simulations of nanoindentation
Our understanding of mechanics is pushed to its limit when the functionality of devices is controlled at the nanometer scale. A fundamental understanding of nanomechanics is needed to design materials with optimum properties. Atomistic simulations can bring an important insight into nanostructure-property relations and, when combined with experiments ...

The ultrahard teeth of mollusks that feed on rocky substrates contain a wear‐resistant coating on their surfaces consisting of densely packed mesocrystalline magnetic nanoparticles within an organic matrix. These coatings display significant hardness and toughness through their highly controlled mesocrystalline architectures.

Substrate effect in the evaluation of elastic modulus of thin PVD coatings from nanoindentation
The comparison of nanoindentation results on reactive HiTUS TiZrHf+ME-Ny (ME = Nb, V, Ta and VNbTa) and reactive DCMS NbMoTaW coatings showed that the influence of substrate stiffness is still not fully eliminated in the evaluation of indentation ...
