Scale‐Specific Viscoelastic Characterization of Hydrogels: Integrated AFM and Finite Element Modeling

open access: yesSmall, Volume 22, Issue 15, 12 March 2026.
An integrated multiscale approach reveals distinct viscoelastic responses of hydrogels across length scales. Combining AFM‐based nanoindentation, finite element modeling, and a novel analytical framework, this study enables accurate, scale‐specific mechanical characterization to guide the design of advanced biomaterials. Abstract Viscoelastic hydrogels

Cement Lines are Stiffer and Harder than Bone but Exhibit Different Mineral–Mechanics Relationships due to Thicker and Shorter Mineral Particles

open access: yesSmall Structures, Volume 7, Issue 3, March 2026.
Bone's complex hierarchical structure contains many internal interfaces, including the cement line (CL) around osteons. This article shows that the CL is stiffer and harder than surrounding bone but has different mineral–mechanics relationships. These findings challenge the view of the CL as a soft, protective interface and provide insights for ...

Synergistic Meta‐Perforated Substrates for Hypersensitive Crack‐Based Strain Sensors

open access: yesSmall Structures, Volume 7, Issue 3, March 2026.
This work presents a mechanical meta‐perforated substrate that significantly enhances infinitesimal‐strain sensitivity in crack‐based sensors. Integrating a re‐entrant mechanical meta‐structure with perforations yields a 760‐fold sensitivity increase at 0.1% strain. The approach amplifies local deformation through synergistic strain and Poisson's‐ratio

Tuning Hardness of ZrO2–SiO2 Glass‐Ceramics Through Densification

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society, Volume 109, Issue 3, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Compared with homogeneous glasses, glass‐ceramics with heterogeneous microstructures enable multiscale architecture control to optimize their performance. In this work, we attempt to regulate the mechanical properties of ZrO2–SiO2 glass‐ceramics through hot compression‐induced densification.
