Non-Poissonian photon statistics from macroscopic photon cutting materials

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
Photon-cutting materials provide a way around efficiency limits for energy conversion by absorbing high-energy photons and ‘cutting’ them into multiple low-energy excitations.

Biocompatible but Antibacterial Mechanism of Graphene Oxide for Sustainable Antibiotics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Graphene oxide (GO) exhibits selective antibacterial activity through specific interactions between its oxygen functional groups and bacterial membrane phospholipid POPG, causing membrane destabilization while maintaining biocompatibility. Model membrane studies and infected wound models in mice and pigs demonstrate effective bacterial suppression and ...

Rate‐Adaptive Site Transformation Catalyst for Parallel Water Dissociation and Hydrogen Adsorption in Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work presents a rate‐adaptive site transformation strategy in Ag‑ethylenediamine intercalated Co9S8, which not only enables parallel water dissociation and H* adsorption, but also allows the catalyst to provide more active sites under high demand, removing a major bottleneck. The catalyst achieves a record current density of 4.2 A cm−2@2.0 V, with

A Mechanistic Blueprint for Fast, High‐Yield Green Scintillators Using Conjugated Polymer–Nanocrystal Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Conjugated polymer–nanocrystal composites are investigated to develop fast, high‐yield green scintillators. The polymer F8BT enables efficient, ultrafast emission, while blends with non‐emitting HfO2 nanocrystals and luminescent CdZnS/ZnS quantum dots reveal distinct sensitization mechanisms.

Assessing particle count in electron microscopy measurements of nanomaterials to support regulatory guidance

open access: yesScientific Reports
In the European Union, nanomaterials are regulated through different pieces of sectoral legislation. This legislation often requires risk assessments and thus reliable characterization data, for which regulatory guidance generally recommend electron ...

Multi‐Functional ZnO–Te Heterojunction Devices Enabling Compact Frequency Quadrupler

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Wafer‐scale ZnO–Te heterojunction devices featuring tunable double negative differential transconductance (D‐NDT) are demonstrated at ≤ 200°C. Leveraging this unique characteristic, a single‐stage frequency quadrupler is realized, achieving a 64%–75% reduction in device count.

Tracking the dynamics of catalytic Pt/CeO2 active sites during water-gas-shift reaction

open access: yesCommunications Materials
Understanding the atomistic structure of the active site during catalytic reactions is of paramount importance in both fundamental studies and practical applications, but such studies are challenging due to the complexity of heterogeneous systems.
