Nanostructure, osteopontin, and mechanical properties of calcitic avian eggshell

open access: yesScience Advances, 2018
The biomineral phase of avian eggshell is characterized at the nanostructure scale and correlated with functional properties. Avian (and formerly dinosaur) eggshells form a hard, protective biomineralized chamber for embryonic growth—an evolutionary ...

Non‐Enzymatic Destruction of the Extracellular Matrix for Activatable Orthotopic Tumor Treatment and Enhanced Drug Penetration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Supramolecular biomimetic nanoaggregates (HFCu NAs), constructed with fluorinated histidine and copper ions via metal coordination and aromatic packing, exhibit enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS)generation at tumor sites, which results in stepwise collapse of the extracellular matrix (ECM), affording tumor microenvironment responsive “turn‐on” 19F ...

Formation of Strain-Induced Quantum Dots in Gated Semiconductor Nanostructures

open access: yes, 2014
Elastic strain changes the energies of the conduction band in a semiconductor, which will affect transport through a semiconductor nanostructure. We show that the typical strains in a semiconductor nanostructure from metal gates are large enough to ...

Switching From Acceptor to FRET Donor: How the Organic Solar Cell Architecture Can Change the Role of a Chromophore

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The non‐fullerene acceptor o‐IDT‐BT‐DCV is used in both binary and ternary blends to investigate the role that it plays in each device architecture. The charge generation pathways are found to differ between the binary and ternary blends with o‐IDT‐BT‐DCV becoming a second donor in the ternary blend.

Universal characteristics of resonant-tunneling field emission from nanostructured surfaces

open access: yes, 2007
We have performed theoretical and experimental studies of field emission from nanostructured semiconductor cathodes. Resonant tunneling through electric-field-induced interface bound states is found to strongly affect the field-emission characteristics ...

Advances in Radiative Heat Transfer: Bridging Far‐Field Fundamentals and Emerging Near‐Field Innovations

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This review synthesizes the evolution of radiative heat transfer, emphasizing the transition from far‐field to near‐field regimes. Traditional frameworks, such as Planck's law, are revisited alongside modern innovations like fluctuational electrodynamics. Applications span nanoscale thermal management, energy harvesting, and thermophotovoltaic systems.
