Tailoring friction stir welding and postheat treatment of high-carbon steels to obtain nanostructured bainite

Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology
Conventional welding processes destroy the unique microstructural characteristics in nanobainitic steels. A novel method, i.e. tailored friction stir welding (FSW) and postheat treatment, was employed to overcome this problem.

Microstructural Characterizations and Kinetics Model of Isothermal Bainite Formation with the Presence of Prior Martensite in High‐Carbon Nanostructured Bainitic Steel

Steel Research International, 2021
Quenching and subsequent isothermal bainite transformation (QBT) and direct isothermal transformation (DIT) procedures are performed to comparatively evaluate the impact of the introduced prior martensite on bainite transformation behaviors and ...

Microstructural evolution and corresponding mechanical properties in nanostructured bainite under reheating conditions

Canadian metallurgical quarterly
This study investigates the microstructural variations and corresponding changes in mechanical properties of super bainite achieved at 300°C, followed by reheating to temperature range of 400-650°C keeping for 1 h.

Aqueous corrosion performance of nanostructured bainitic steel

Materials & Design (1980-2015), 2014
In this study, the corrosion performance of nanostructured bainitic steel was compared with martensitic steel in chloride-containing solution using electrochemical techniques. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results showed that the polarization resistance (Rp) for nanostructured bainitic steel (3400 Ω cm2) was higher than that of ...

Combinatorial optimization of carbide-free bainitic nanostructures

Acta Materialia, 2013
Thermodynamic calculations in combination with a neural network model are employed to predict the conditions under which nanostructured carbide-free bainite can be formed. The method recovers well the conditions under which the alloys reported in the literature display such features.

Deformation mechanisms in nanostructured bainitic steels under torsion

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2020
Abstract A clean high carbon steel was made using vacuum induction melting and three distinct nanostructures were obtained by austempering it at 250, 300 and 350 °C respectively after a similar austenitization treatment at 950 °C. A decrease in austempering temperature causes refinement of bainitic ferrite (BF) as well as retained austenite (RA ...

Preparation of nanostructured bainite in medium-carbon alloysteel

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2013
Abstract Nanostructured bainite was prepared in medium-carbon Si–Al-rich alloy steel by low-temperature austempering of deformation-strengthened supercooled austenite. The deformation strengthening of supercooled austenite can depress the martensite start temperature, allowing austempering at a lower temperature to form nanostructured bainite with ...

Estimation of fracture toughness of tempered nanostructured bainite

Materials Science and Technology, 2012
Fine structures consisting of a mixture of extremely thin bainite plates embedded in a matrix of austenite, are now a commercial proposition. Whereas the phase transformation theory for such structures is fairly well established, the understanding of their mechanical properties is not.

High strain rate deformation of nanostructured super bainite

Journal of Materials Science, 2018
Outstanding mechanical properties of nanostructured carbide-free hard bainitic steels, also known as super bainite, with microstructural constituents of less than 100 nm thicknesses make them prone to be used in different engineering applications. However, besides their exceptional strength and ductility combinations during ordinary static or quasi ...

Regeneration treatment on welding of nanostructured bainite

2013
A lecture given by K. Fang, at the Adventures in the Physical Metallurgy of Steels (APMS) conference held in Cambridge University. Nanostructured bainite is incredibly difficult to weld because of its high carbon concentration. Here an innovative method is presented to resolve the weldability.
