An alloy system based on iron is described in which it has been possible to create a high density of interfaces by heat treatment alone. The resulting structure consists of a mixture of slender platelets of bainitic ferrite, just 20–40 nm in thickness, embedded in a matrix of carbon-enriched austenite.

Quantitative prediction of grain boundary thermal conductivities from local atomic environments
Connecting grain boundary structures to macroscopic thermal behaviour is an important step in materials analysis and design. Here the authors develop a physical model combined with a machine-learning approach to accurately predict thermal conductivities ...

Ultrafast high-harmonic nanoscopy of magnetization dynamics
Light induced magnetization dynamics can be as fast as few tens of femtoseconds. Here, Zayko et al show ultrafast microscopy based on high-harmonic radiation for direct imaging of ultrafast phenomena and capture femtosecond spin dynamics at the nanoscale.

Microscopic mechanism of biphasic interface relaxation in lithium iron phosphate after delithiation
Improving the performance of Li-ion batteries relies on understanding charging/discharging mechanisms. Here the authors visualize the interfacial structure and composition of a partially delithiated lithium iron phosphate single crystal as a function of ...

Neutron Scattering as a Powerful Tool to Investigate Magnetic Shape Memory Alloys: A Review
Magnetic shape memory alloys (MSMAs) are an interesting class of smart materials characterized by undergoing macroscopic deformations upon the application of a pertinent stimulus: temperature, stress and/or external magnetic fields. Since the deformation
