Balancing Hydrophobicity and Hydrophilicity: Dual Filler‐Engineered Proton Exchange Membranes for Durable, High‐Power Fuel Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Polarity‐matched Zr–MOFs program Nafion's nanoscale morphology during solution casting. Hydrophilic UiO‐66 preserves hydrated pathways, while hydrophobic UiO‐67 increases the proton hopping sites by densifying ionic clusters. Combining both fillers yields a membrane that delivers 176 mS cm−1 conductivity, reaches 1.46 W cm−2 under 200 kPa, and triples ...

Surface Nanostructuring of Copper Using Fluoride and Chloride [PDF]

open access: yes
Copper is an active electrocatalyst for various energy conversion reactions, but its performance depends on the structure of the active surface sites. In this work, we propose a simple strategy to tailor both the roughness and the active site's geometry ...

Inhomogeneities in Glass: From Defects to Functional Nanostructures

open access: yesEncyclopedia
Glass inhomogeneities represent variations in the structural or compositional uniformity of glass, traditionally associated with process-related defects such as striae, bubbles, stones, and inclusions that impair transparency and mechanical stability ...

Chitin‐Derived Carbon‐Metal Functional Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Functional carbon materials are synthesized from combination of biopolymer (chitin) and iron precursors. The resultant material exhibits superior surface area and adsorptive properties compared to carbon materials synthesized directly from pure chitin.

Programming Nanoscale Reaction Environments via Peptide Localization for Gold Nanoparticle Growth in Liposomal Nanoreactors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The liposome nanoreactor method enables uniform metal nanoparticle synthesis using the interior as a reaction environment. We demonstrate that peptide sequences and lipid compositions act as a functional molecular switch to control reaction environments in liposome nanoreactors.

Water Organization and Hydration‐Dependent Hydroxide Transport in Anion Exchange Membranes (AEM)

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Hydroxide transport in anion exchange membranes is governed by the organization of water within the polymer rather than by hydration alone. A hydration‐window framework is presented to unify transport, swelling, and mechanical stability, providing guidance for designing durable membranes for fuel cells and other hydroxide‐based electrochemical ...

Engineered Nanotopography to Modulate Growth and Signaling of Neuronal Networks

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines the interaction between neurons and nanoscale topographies on engineered substrates. Neurons cultured on nanowires, nanopillars and nanoneedles exhibit enhanced neurite outgrowth, form more organized neuronal circuits, and display improved synaptic connectivity, compared to flat substrates.

Nanostructuring metal-carbon composites for electrochemical biosensors

open access: yes, 2015
High performance electrochemical sensors are capable of detecting various biosignals and molecules from biological samples. Particularly, certain analytes with very low concentration within body fluids such as hydrogen peroxide, nitric oxide or heavy ...

High Anodic-Voltage Focusing of Charge Carriers in Silicon Enables the Etching of Regularly-Arranged Submicrometer Pores at High Density and High Aspect-Ratio

open access: yesFrontiers in Chemistry, 2018
The anodic dissolution of silicon in acidic electrolytes is a well-known technology enabling the silicon machining to be accurately controlled down to the micrometer scale in low-doped n-type silicon electrodes.
