Pnictocatalysis

open access: yesChemCatChem, Volume 16, Issue 16, August 26, 2024.
In analogy with carbocatalysis, thermal catalysis on extended surfaces of Group 15 elements is coined here as “pnictocatalysis” (phospho‐, arsene‐, antimony‐ and bismuth‐catalysis). We show the few examples reported so far, which however include C−C, C−O, C−S, C−N and C‐halide bond‐forming reactions, thus showcasing the synthetic potential of this new ...

Rapid sequence induction of anaesthesia in UK emergency departments: A national census [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Introduction: Rapid sequence induction of anaesthesia and tracheal intubation (RSI) is an integral part of modern emergency care. Previously, emergency department (ED) RSI has been provided by anaesthetists, but UK emergency physicians are increasingly ...

In‐vitro Clinical Diagnostics using RNA‐Cleaving DNAzymes

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 25, Issue 11, June 3, 2024.
We review the use of RNA‐cleaving DNAzymes (RCDs) as molecular tools for the development of clinical diagnostics, covering both the selection of RCDs and the development of RCD‐based assays and sensors, and provide several examples of the use of such tests for evaluation of spiked biological samples or patient samples related to both chronic and ...

Predominance and high antibiotic resistance of the emerging Clostridium difficile genotypes NAPCR1 and NAP9 in a Costa Rican hospital over a 2-year period without outbreaks

open access: yesEmerging Microbes and Infections, 2016
Clostridium difficile is the major causative agent of nosocomial antibiotic-associated diarrhea. In a 2009 outbreak of C. difficile-associated diarrhea that was recorded in a major Costa Rican hospital, the hypervirulent NAP1 strain (45%) predominated ...

Cardiac arrest in obstetric patients receiving anaesthetic care: results from the 7th National Audit Project of the Royal College of Anaesthetists

open access: yesAnaesthesia, Volume 79, Issue 5, Page 514-523, May 2024.
Summary The 7th National Audit Project (NAP7) of the Royal College of Anaesthetists studied peri‐operative cardiac arrest. Additional inclusion criteria for obstetric anaesthesia were: cardiac arrest associated with neuraxial block performed by an anaesthetist outside the operating theatre (labour epidural analgesia); and cardiac arrest associated with

A genomic atlas of human adrenal and gonad development [version 1; referees: awaiting peer review] [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background: In humans, the adrenal glands and gonads undergo distinct biological events between 6-10 weeks post conception (wpc), such as testis determination, the onset of steroidogenesis and primordial germ cell development.

Airway and respiratory complications during anaesthesia and associated with peri‐operative cardiac arrest as reported to the 7th National Audit Project of the Royal College of Anaesthetists

open access: yesAnaesthesia, Volume 79, Issue 4, Page 368-379, April 2024.
Summary The 7th National Audit Project (NAP7) of the Royal College of Anaesthetists studied complications of the airway and respiratory system during anaesthesia care including peri‐operative cardiac arrest. Among 24,721 surveyed cases, airway and respiratory complications occurred commonly (n = 421 and n = 264, respectively).

The United Kingdom National Audit Projects: a narrative review [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The Royal College of Anaesthetists’ National Audit Project (NAP) programme has been running in its current form since 2006. Since NAP3 was commissioned the NAPs have examined rare but important complications of anaesthesia and related subspecialties. The

The incidence of potentially serious complications during non‐obstetric anaesthetic practice in the United Kingdom: an analysis from the 7th National Audit Project (NAP7) activity survey

open access: yesAnaesthesia, Volume 79, Issue 1, Page 43-53, January 2024.
Summary Complications and critical incidents arising during anaesthesia due to patient, surgical or anaesthetic factors, may cause harm themselves or progress to more severe events, including cardiac arrest or death. As part of the 7th National Audit Project of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, we studied a prospective national cohort of unselected ...

Peri‐operative cardiac arrest: epidemiology and clinical features of patients analysed in the 7th National Audit Project of the Royal College of Anaesthetists

open access: yesAnaesthesia, Volume 79, Issue 1, Page 18-30, January 2024.
Summary The 7th National Audit Project of the Royal College of Anaesthetists studied peri‐operative cardiac arrest in the UK, a topic of importance to patients, anaesthetists and surgeons. Here we report the results of the 12‐month registry, from 16 June 2021 to 15 June 2022, focusing on epidemiology and clinical features. We reviewed 881 cases of peri‐
