The prevalence of preferential nasal breathing in adults

Respiratory Medicine, 1993
The prevalence of preferential nasal breathing was studied in an awake adult population. One hundred and ninety-four people consented to gentle manual compression of the nostrils. They were advised to 'breathe in and out', but no further information regarding breathing was given to avoid influencing the patient.

Peak Nasal Inspiratory Flow (PNIF) for Nasal Breathing Evaluation

Facial Plastic Surgery, 2023
AbstractMeasuring nasal airflow and nasal breathing has been a major goal of rhinology. Many objective methods for measuring nasal airflow or nasal airway resistance or dimensions provide valuable data but are time-consuming and require expensive equipment and trained technicians, thus making these methods less practical for clinical practice.

Effect of a Nasal Dilatator on Nasal Patency During Normal and Forced Nasal Breathing

International Journal of Sports Medicine, 1998
A nasal dilatator contains two elastic strips, which provide the dilatator with a spring action. The aimed function of the nasal dilatator is to slightly open the nares and hereby facilitate nasal breathing. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a nasal dilatator by measuring nasal airway resistance during normal breathing and nasal ...

Mouth breathing, “nasal disuse,” and pediatric sleep-disordered breathing

Sleep and Breathing, 2015
Adenotonsillectomy (T&A) may not completely eliminate sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), and residual SDB can result in progressive worsening of abnormal breathing during sleep. Persistence of mouth breathing post-T&As plays a role in progressive worsening through an increase of upper airway resistance during sleep with secondary impact on orofacial ...

Overview of Nasal Airway and Nasal Breathing Evaluation

Facial Plastic Surgery
AbstractSeveral methods are available for evaluating nasal breathing and nasal airflow, as this evaluation may be made from several different perspectives.Physiologic methods for nasal airway evaluation directly measure nasal airflow or nasal airway resistance, while anatomical methods measure nasal airway dimensions.

The relationship between nasal airway size and nasal-oral breathing

American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, 1988
Most clinicians agree that impaired nasal breathing results in obligatory mouth breathing. Some believe that mouth breathing influences dentofacial growth; others disagree. The term mouth breathing is confusing because total mouth breathing rarely occurs. A combination of nasal and oral breathing is more usual.

Algorithm for Nasal Breathing Impairment Evaluation

Facial Plastic Surgery
AbstractAssessing patients with complaints of nasal obstruction has traditionally been done by evaluation of the nasal airway looking for fixed or dynamic obstructive locations that could impair nasal airflow. Not infrequently, however, symptoms of nasal obstruction do not match the clinical examination of the nasal airway.

Nasal breathing during smoking

Russian Otorhinolaryngology, 2017
It is known that the nasal cycle (NC) alongside with the mucociliary transport (MCT) plays an important role in the protection and restoration of the ciliated epithelium from exposure of various triggers including tobacco smoke. The objective of this work was to study the NC during smoking. The objectives of the study were to conduct daily registration

Subjective perception of nasal breathing

2022
Nasal obstruction is a very common nasal complaint in clinical practice. The mechanism of nasal breathing perception is poorly understood and controversial. Currently, there is no reliable tool for measuring nasal perception of air flow. This thesis aims to develop an understanding of nasal perception pathway, identify factors contributing to nasal ...
