Comparative Morphology and Mechanics of Aquatic and Terrestrial Feeding Salamanders

Jaw muscle size, bite force, and skull strength are driven by multiple factors, not just the difference between the two habitats. Necturus produces higher bite forces than Salamandra, but the stress distribution is less even in Necturus, suggesting Salamandra's skull shape is better adapated to resist feeding loads.
