Terpene biosynthesis by nasute termite soldiers (Isoptera: Nasutitermitinae)

Insect Biochemistry, 1981
Solutions of the labelled precursors [U14C]-d-glucose, [1-14C]-sodium acetate, [2-14C]-sodium acetate, [2-14C]-RS-mevalonic acid sodium salt and [3-14C]-R--mevalonic acid sodium salt were injected into the abdomens of soldiers of the Neotropical termite Nasutitermes octopilis (Banks) (Isoptera: Termitidae: Nasutitermitinae).

Soldier defense secretions of the Malaysian termite,Hospitalioermes umbrinus (Isoptera, Nasutitermitinae)

Journal of Chemical Ecology, 1983
Trinervita-1(15),8(19)-dien-2β,3α-diol and the new trinervita-1(15),8(19)-dien-2β, 3α-diol 2-O-acetate constitute the major diterpene constituents of the soldier defense secretions of the NasutitermiteHospitalitermes umbrinus of Malaysian region. Studies on the intraspecific variations on sympatric and allopatric populations indicate two distinct ...

The ultrastructure of the rostral gland in soldiers of Verrucositermes tuberosus (Blattodea: Termitidae: Nasutitermitinae)

Arthropod Structure & Development, 2023
The soil-feeding habit is an evolutionary novelty found in some advanced groups of termites. The study of such groups is important to revealing interesting adaptations to this way-of-life. The genus Verrucositermes is one such example, characterized by peculiar outgrowths on the head capsule, antennae and maxillary palps, which are not found in any ...

A review of the Nasutitermitinae (Isoptera: Termitidae) from India

Oriental Insects, 1983
Abstract Members of the subfamily Nasutitermitinae are widely distributed throughout the tropics. This subfamily is the highest evolved one, and is also the largest subfamily in the Order Isoptera. The direction of evolutionary advancement in the subfamily Nasutitermitinae is the gradual reduction of the mandibles of the soldier caste accompanied by ...

The nasus gland: A new gland in soldiers of Angularitermes (Termitidae, Nasutitermitinae)

Arthropod Structure & Development, 2015
Termites have developed many exocrine glands, generally dedicated to defence or communication. Although a few of these glands occur in all termite species, or represent synapomorphies of larger clades, others are morphological innovations of a single species, or a few related species. Here, we describe the nasus gland, a new gland occurring at the base

Phylogenetic relationship of the termite genera of the subfamily Nasutitermitinae (Isoptera : Termitidae)

Oriental Insects, 1968
Abstract The phylogeny of the genera of the subfamily Nasutitermitinae is discussed. The closest ally of Nasutitermitinae seems to be Macrotermitinae, the fungus cultivating termites. On the basis of structures of imago-worker mandibles, a diphyletic evolution of the genera of Nasutitermitinae from the primitive genus Syntermes is suggested.

Defence secretion of the black termite, Grallatotermes africanus (Termitidae, Nasutitermitinae) [PDF]

open access: yesInsect Biochemistry, 1979
Abstract The monoterpene and diterpene components of the soldier defence secretion of the nasute termite Grallatotermes africanus (Harris) (Isoptera: Termitidae: Nasutitermitinae) have been identified by microspectrometric methods. The diterpenes possess the tricyclic trinervitane and tetracyclic kempane skeletons commonly found among soldiers of ...

Soldier defense secretions of malaysian free-ranging termite of the genusLacessititermes (Isoptera, Nasutitermitinae)

Journal of Chemical Ecology, 1990
Soldiers of free-ranging termites of the genusLacessititermes (Isoptera, Nasutitermitinae) secrete from their frontal glands a mixture of monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and diterpenes.Lacessititermes ransoneti, L. laborator, andL. species A produce species-specific secretions, the composition being most complex forL. laborator.
