The presence and vertical distribution of bivalve species was observed during summer 1995 and 1996 in Mljet National Park within the student project "Research of Macrobenthos in Sea of Mljet Island". 21 stations along the coast of National Park and 10 in Mljet s "lakes" were surveyed as well as two stations outside the borders of National Park.

Pinna nobilis is one of the most imposing member of Mediterranean bivalve mollusks, reaching a size up to 120 cm and with reported maximum age of 27 years. It is endangered and protected species under both local and EU laws with recent demographic expansions.

The Mediterranean endemic Cladocora caespitosa (Linnaeus, 1767) is a colonial scleractinian coral belonging to the family Faviidae and the only zooxanthellate coral from Mediterranean whose colonies may fuse in reef-like structures similar to those in tropical seas.
