Functional comparison of EncB and EncC cargo proteins in iron storage within the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Encapsulins are protein nanocompartments that play an important role in iron storage. In the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin system, two cargo proteins called EncB and EncC contribute to iron mineralization. Here, we show that EncB and EncC generate iron‐containing minerals with distinct chemical compositions, suggesting that the composition of stored ...

Structural and biochemical analysis of a B12 superbinder

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
BtuG proteins are vitamin B12 scavengers in Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a dominant human gut bacterium. We present crystal structures of three BtuG homologs bound to cobalamin and its precursor cobinamide, revealing picomolar binding affinities, among the highest known for any natural protein.

Performance improvements and increased ruminal microbial interactions in Angus heifers via supplementation with native rumen bacteria during high-grain challenge

open access: yesScientific Reports
Feedlot cattle may be subjected to digestive disorders, including ruminal acidosis, due to high concentration of grain in their diet. Therefore, novel feeding strategies are required to maximize animal performance and mitigate economic losses in the ...

Are We Seeking Pimatisiwin or Creating Pomewin? Implications for Water Policy

open access: yesInternational Indigenous Policy Journal, 2012
The purpose of this discussion is to describe the worldview and sacred relationship of the Cree people in Alberta, as well as how colonial policy has created despair (pomewin) in Aboriginal communities and a state of disconnectedness from the water.

Assessment of heat stress induced alterations in polymorphonuclear (PMN) cell activity in native and crossbred cows

open access: yesJournal of Applied Animal Research, 2020
Our current investigation was aimed to study differential influence of heat stress on defensive functions of blood polymorphonuclear cells among native and crossbred cows by culturing them in vitro after animal exposure to in vivo heat stress.

The Shewanella oneidensis Fic enzyme SoFic targets the switch‐I region of EF‐Tu for AMPylation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fic enzymes mediate diverse post‐translational modifications across all domains of life, including AMPylation. Prokaryotic EF‐Tu can be AMPylated and deAMPylated by the conserved Fic enzyme SoFic. Structural and biochemical approaches were used to characterize the effect of AMPylation on EF‐Tu, SoFic's enzymatic activities, and the enzyme‐target ...

Changes in liver stiffness measurements following hepatitis C sustained virologic response among Alaska Native adults treated with sofosbuvir-based direct acting anti-viral therapy

open access: yesInternational Journal of Circumpolar Health
Direct-acting antiviral (DAA) hepatitis C treatment can reduce fibrosis and prevent cirrhosis and its sequelae. This study aims to evaluate changes in fibrosis and lab measurements from pre-treatment to post-treatment and over time following the end-of ...
