Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Integrative analysis of small RNA and degradome sequencing reveals the role of miRNAs in monoterpene biosynthesis in linalool-type Cinnamomum camphora

open access: yesBMC Plant Biology
Background Cinnamomum camphora is a valuable aromatic oil-producing species with significant economic and industrial importance. Linalool, a monoterpenoid compound and a major component of camphor leaf essential oil, is widely used in cosmetics, food ...

Converting Chinese fir plantations into mixed stands: Effects of density on soil organic carbon mineralization and its temperature sensitivity

open access: yesTrees, Forests and People
Converting monoculture plantations into mixed stands is a key strategy for enhancing soil carbon sequestration. The mechanisms behind soil organic carbon (SOC) turnover and its temperature response at different mixed densities are unclear.

An epithelial GPR35 isoform supports tumor‐associated transcriptional and metabolic phenotypes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
GPR35 generates two functionally distinct isoforms with previously unresolved roles. GPR35‐short mediates immune‐cell chemotaxis, while GPR35‐long is enriched in colorectal cancer epithelium, where it supports increased metabolism, proliferation, and tumor‐associated transcriptional programs.

A CcMYB90-CcCHS1 module regulates flavonoid biosynthesis during pericarp darkening in Cinnamomum camphora

open access: yesIndustrial Crops and Products
In the camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora L.), bioactive metabolites are found in different parts, including the leaves, fruits, and stems; its fruit, particularly the pericarp, is abundant in flavonoids and volatile compounds.

Ilex decapetala (Aquifoliaceae), a new holly species from Vietnam revealed by molecular and morphological approaches [PDF]

open access: yesPhytoKeys
A new species, Ilex decapetala, is described and illustrated from central Vietnam. It is distinguished by its female flowers with (8–)9–10(–11) pink petals (mostly 10); such a high floral merism is rare within the genus and, on top of this rarity, no ...

Comparative Phytochemical Analyses of Flowers from Primula veris subsp. veris Growing Wild and from Ex Situ Cultivation in Greece

open access: yesFoods, 2023
In the last decades, Primula veris subsp. veris (roots and flowers) has been over harvested through legal and illegal ways in Greece, due to its extremely high commercial demand, as it is used in industry because of its well-known therapeutic properties.

Seed rain and soil seed banks limit native regeneration within urban forest restoration plantings in Hamilton City, New Zealand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Restoration of native forest vegetation in urban environments may be limited due to isolation from native seed sources and to the prevalence of exotic plant species.

Engineering peptides into antibodies—opportunities and strategies for therapeutic innovation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Peptides and antibodies occupy complementary therapeutic niches. Peptides recognize difficult targets in a compact format, while antibodies add specificity, long half‐life, and effector functions. This review examines strategies that merge both modalities—peptide grafting into loops, terminal and Fc fusions, and bioconjugation—highlighting how ...

The Assessment of Antimicrobial and Anti-Biofilm Activity of Essential Oils against Staphylococcus aureus Strains

open access: yesAntibiotics, 2023
The increase in antimicrobial resistance and tolerance over the years has become a serious public health problem, leading to the inevitable development of alternative antimicrobial agents as substitutes for industrial pharmaceutical antibiotics targeting
