Roads and Roadless Areas in Cyprus: Implications For The Natura 2000 Network

open access: yesJournal of Landscape Ecology, 2014
The road network in Cyprus has seen an 88% increase in the last 20 years. This expansion has not been followed by any kind of assessment on the effects of the network on nature conservation.

A Century of Shifting Native Species-Accumulation Curves Reveals Long-Term Biodiversity Loss. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Lett
Using nearly a century of vegetation‐plot data across the Netherlands, we show that species‐area relationships have significantly flattened over time, meaning that larger areas are now required to support the same level of species richness as the historical baseline. This shift reflects widespread biodiversity decline and biotic homogenization.

PondNet – towards a global network of experiments on the effects of climate change on aquatic ecosystems

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Global change is reshaping the distribution of biodiversity and the functioning of ecosystems. Predicting the long‐term consequences of such changes remains a challenge due to a need for a clear understanding of the mechanisms underpinning ecosystem‐level responses, as well as the role of geographical and environmental contingencies.

Columnanidus calitzdorpensis ichnogen. ichnosp. nov: A new Middle Pleistocene subterranean termite trace fossil from South Africa

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Termites are landscape geo‐engineers whose nesting activities substantially modify the physical and chemical properties of soils. Fossilised termite nests commonly constitute the only identifiable evidence of ancient termite activity and represent valuable trace fossil archives for reconstructing past environments.

Participatory approaches in the management of Natura 2000: when EU biodiversity policy gets closer to its citizens. Bruges Political Research Paper No. 26/May 2012 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The Habitats Directive has created a European network of protected areas combining environmental protection with social and economic activities. Although not clearly advocated in the Directive, participatory approaches have incrementally emerged in ...

Protected areas do not outperform urban wastelands in supporting insect pollinators and pollination in central Germany

open access: yesBasic and Applied Ecology
The Natura 2000 network is central to Europe's conservation efforts to address biodiversity decline, with ongoing plans to expand protected areas and restore habitats across the European Union.

A simple index for assessing cumulative human impacts on mountain lakes

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract Mountain lakes are highly sensitive ecosystems and effective sentinels of environmental change, yet the exposure and magnitude of the human footprint remain poorly quantified. In this study, we develop a simple and non‐invasive abiotic index to assess cumulative pressures on mountain lakes. The proposed index integrates eight variables grouped

A low-cost and repeatable procedure for modelling the regional distribution of Natura 2000 terrestrial habitats

open access: yesJournal of Maps, 2019
The present paper describes a procedure for mapping the distribution of Natura 2000 terrestrial habitats (Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC) at the regional scale (Lombardy, Northern Italy) by means of open-source software (QGIS and R). The habitat map within
