Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

On the size of the fibers of spectral maps induced by semialgebraic embeddings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Let ${\mathcal S}(M)$ be the ring of (continuous) semialgebraic functions on a semialgebraic set $M\subset{\mathbb R}^m$ and ${\mathcal S}^*(M)$ its subring of bounded semialgebraic functions.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Preparation and studying of some properties of polymer composites reinforced with natural and artificial fibers

open access: yesIraqi Journal of Physics, 2019
This work concerns the thermal and sound insulation as well as the mechanical properties of polymer matrix composite reinforced with glass fibers. These fibers may have dangerous effect during handling, for example the glass fibers might cause some ...

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Effect of water on Bombyx mori regenerated silk fibers and its application in modifying their mechanical properties [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The effect of water on regenerated silkworm silk fibers has been studied and compared with that of water on natural silkworm silk fibers. Regenerated fibers are spun from an N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) fibroin solution through a wet-spinning ...
