Experimental Investigation of Fracture Interaction between Natural Fractures and Hydraulic Fracture in Naturally Fractured Reservoirs

open access: yesSPE EUROPEC/EAGE Annual Conference and Exhibition, 2011
Abstract The interaction between natural fractures and hydraulic fracture was observed in multiple naturally fractured blocks by a series of physical model tests. The effect of natural fractures and in-situ stress on fracture geometry was revealed. Three types of fracture geometry were observed due to a change of in-situ stress contrast.

Effect of a natural fracture on hydraulic fracture propagation

open access: yes, 2004
The effect of an existing fracture in a naturally fractured formation on the extension of a hydraulically induced natural fracture has been studied. Fracture interaction criterion was presented and a numerical model was developed to predict the dynamic fracture dimensions based on PKN³¹ fracture mechanics.

On the nature of stress fractures

The American Journal of Sports Medicine, 1978
It is felt that stress fractures are caused by excessive, repetitive muscle forces acting across the affected bone. These fractures should be suspected in participants of athletic endeavors who present with a history of persistent, focal, activity-related pain regardless of their stage of physical conditioning.

Hydraulic-Fracture Propagation in a Naturally Fractured Reservoir

SPE Production & Operations, 2010
Summary We present the results of numerical modeling that quantify the physical mechanisms of mechanical activation of a natural fault because of contact with a pressurized hydraulic fracture (HF). We focus on three stages of interactions: HF approaching, contact, and subsequent infiltration of the fault.

Detection and Characterization of Fractures in Naturally Fractured Reservoirs

Proceedings of SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 2000
Abstract Imaging log, sonic log, optical microscopy, NMR, MRI, and tomography have greatly enhanced the possibility of measuring fracture geometric characteristics. However, the fracture hydraulic width and permeability can only be evaluated from dynamic data revealing production or adsorption along the wellbore.

Reactivation mechanism of natural fractures by hydraulic fracturing in naturally fractured shale reservoirs

Journal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering, 2015
Abstract Hydraulic fracturing technique has been commonly used in the development of shale reservoir aiming to produce from complex network of fractures. One of the key parameters that affects the hydraulic fracture complexity is the natural fracture in the shale reservoir.

Sternal fractures — The natural history

Annals of Emergency Medicine, 1988
A five-year retrospective study was undertaken to analyze the natural history of sternal fractures and to scrutinize the current method of management. Sixty-six patients with documented sternal fractures were evaluated. The most common mechanism of injury was motor vehicle accidents (59%). Most of these victims did not wear seat belts.
