Murder Nature

open access: yes, 2021
This paper examines the effect of weather shocks on violent crime using disaggregated data from Brazilian municipalities over the period 1991-2015. I document that adverse weather shocks in the form of droughts lead to a significant increase in violent crime, with the effect appearing to persist beyond the growing season and over the medium run.

Comparative study on artificial and natural weathering of wood-polymer compounds: A comprehensive literature review

open access: yesCase Studies in Construction Materials, 2018
Wood-polymer composites (WPC) increasingly gain in popularity in the building industry. To date there is less long-term experience from facade applications which reliably confirm that relevant material properties are sufficient throughout their expected ...

Moisture conditions in coated wood panels during 18 months natural weathering at five sites in Europe [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Wood moisture content of coated panels of Scots pine sapwood was recorded during 18 months natural weathering in Vienna by logging electric resistance and temperature near the surface.

A geochemical study of the winonaites: Evidence for limited partial melting and constraints on the precursor composition [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The winonaites are primitive achondrites which are associated with the IAB iron meteorites. Textural evidence implies heating to at least the Fe, Ni–FeS cotectic, but previous geochemical studies are ambiguous about the extent of silicate melting in ...

ML Workflows for Screening Degradation‐Relevant Properties of Forever Chemicals

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The environmental persistence of per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) necessitates efficient remediation strategies. This study presents physics‐informed machine learning workflows that accurately predict critical degradation properties, including bond dissociation energies and polarizability.

Effects of Wood Roughness, Light Pigments, and Water Repellent on the Color Stability of Painted Spruce Subjected to Natural and Accelerated Weathering

open access: yesBioResources, 2015
This study examined the color stability of painted Norway spruce (Picea abies) samples subjected to natural and accelerated weathering, using Duncan’s tests and correlation analyses. The following effects were studied: (1) the different initial roughness

Introgressed Variation in TaMYB7‐A1 Drives Graded Dormancy and Climate‐Adaptive Pre‐Harvest Sprouting Resistance in Wheat

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
TaMYB7‐A1 directly activates TaABI5 to enhance ABA signaling and regulate ABA‐GA homeostasis, enforcing seed dormancy. Its superior allele, derived from wild einkorn introgression, harbors a MITE insertion that elevates expression and two amino acid substitutions that enhance transcriptional activity, collectively generating graded PHS resistance for ...

Single‐Particle Mid‐Infrared Photothermal Imaging Reveals Hidden Heterogeneity in Real‐World Micro‐ and Nanoplastics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Mid‐infrared photothermal imaging enables multidimensional profiling of micro‐ and nanoplastics in bottled water. A total of 9.9 × 104 particles L−1 is detected, with 64% in the nanoscale regime. Spectral evolution, including peak narrowing and band shifts, reveals local chain reorganization in polyethylene terephthalate (PET), highlighting intrinsic ...

Differential etching after lithic heat treatment: First results of an experimental study

open access: yesJournal of Lithic Studies, 2018
The practice of lithic heat treatment creates a combination of initial dull flake scars and subsequent smooth flake scars when the implement is finished after heating.
