Artificial wetlands: a device for restoring natural wetland values

1993
In The Netherlands, many oligotrophic and mesotrophic surface waters have been eutrophied. Eutrophication of rivers, streams and lakes is also a major problem in other West European countries (Melzer, 1976; Whitton, 1984; Hoffmann, 1985). The influx of phosphorus into Dutch inland waters can be attributed to three main sources.

Study on Sediment Characteristics in Artificial Wetland and Natural Wetland

Advanced Materials Research, 2012
This paper studied the sidemen characteristics of artificial wetland and natural wetland by cumulant, sedimentary organic matter, DOC and nitrate content. The results showed that the sediments in artificial wetlands upper layer were instable and uncompacted and often had trouble collecting for various factors .which was different from in natural ...

Natural Wetlands Treating Diffuse Pollution

2006
This chapter presents a case study to assess the temporal and spatial hydraulic and biochemical functioning of groundwater-fed ditch ecosystems and their contribution to the overall catchment and particularly nutrient dynamics of a riparian peatland located in the River Eider Valley.

Community Patterns In Treatment Wetlands, Natural Wetlands, and Croplands In Florida

The Wilson Journal of Ornithology, 2013
Abstract In Florida, roughly 18,000 ha of treatment wetlands called Stormwater Treatment Areas (STAs) have been constructed on agricultural land to reduce phosphorous loads to the Everglades. Little is known about how avian communities in these STAs compare to those present on other similar land types.

Economic value evaluation of wetland service in Yeyahu Wetland Nature Reserve, Beijing

Chinese Geographical Science, 2011
Based on multi-source data, this paper evaluated the economic value of ecological services in the Yeyahu Wetland Nature Reserve, Beijing, China. The ecological services of wetland included gas regulation, water quality im- provement, biodiversity maintenance, erosion control, water supply, recreational opportunity, raw material supply and existence ...

Does the element composition of soils of restored wetlands resemble natural wetlands?

Geoderma, 2019
Abstract The main goal of this study was to assess if wetland restoration changes soil biogeochemistry, here measured as organic matter content (OM) and element concentrations of the soils, back to its original state. We selected nine sampling sites in the Sanjiang Plain, China, that had two or three of the wetland types ‘undisturbed/natural ...

Assessing Natural and Anthropogenic Variability in Wetland Structure for Two Hydrogeomorphic Riverine Wetland Subclasses

Environmental Management, 2013
The hydrogeomorphic approach (HGM) to wetland classification and functional assessment has been applied regionally throughout the United States, but the ability of HGM functional assessment models to reflect wetland condition has limited verification.

Fate of Hydrocarbon Contaminants In Natural Wetlands

Journal of Canadian Petroleum Technology, 1999
Abstract Conventional clean-up approaches to contaminated wetlands are aggressive and expensive, and may harm the wetland ecosystem. Current findings suggest that wetlands may be capable of attenuating contamination through natural processes including sorption, biodegradation, and volatilization.

Greenhouse Gas Fluxes from Restored Agricultural Wetlands and Natural Wetlands, Northwestern Indiana

2014
We measured gas fluxes and production efficiency rates of CO2, CH4, and N2O from natural and restored freshwater marshes in northwestern Indiana to evaluate the contribution of restored wetlands to regional greenhouse gas fluxes. Anaerobic soil incubations were used to determine production efficiencies, and static flux chamber measurements were used to

Constructed wetlands as nature-based solutions

2020
Accordingly to The United Nations World Water Development Report 2018 "Nature-based solutions (NBS) are inspired and supported by nature and use, or mimic, natural processes to contribute to the improved management of water". In general, if NBS are incorporated in a multipurpose green infrastructure, the network can perform better or equally to a grey ...
