Nausea and nutrition

Autonomic Neuroscience, 2006
Nausea and vomiting are symptoms associated with a wide variety of diseases and particular life conditions, such as pregnancy. The symptoms may occur in acute form or chronically depending on the underlying pathogenesis. In some cases, nausea and vomiting are directly triggered by food, e.g. in patients suffering from food allergy or food intolerances.

The psychophysiology of nausea [PDF]

open access: possibleActa Biologica Hungarica, 2002
Nausea is an unpleasant sensation usually referred to the stomach and sometimes followed by vomiting. Little is known about the subjective aspects of nausea because like pain and fatigue, it is a private sensation. We conceive of nausea as a complex control mechanism that signals us when not to eat.

Importance of nausea

Cancer Nursing, 1994
Oncology nurses and patients identify nausea and vomiting as the two most distressing side effects of chemotherapy. The onset and duration of nausea and vomiting in patients receiving chemotherapy may vary. Assessment of the multiple dimensions of nausea: The Nausea Profile (NP)

Journal of Psychosomatic Research, 1996

Nausea and Vomiting in Pregnancy Is Not Always Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy

Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Canada, 2010
The majority of pregnant women experience nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. However, nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is not always nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP). The differential diagnosis of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy can be extensive and the underlying cause can sometimes be difficult to diagnose.

Nausea and Vomiting

2010
The introduction of two new classes of antiemetics, the 5 hydroxytryptamine 3 receptor antagonists (5HT3 RAs) and the neurokinin1 receptor antagonists (NK1 RAs) have revolutionised the treatment of post-chemotherapy acute and delayed nausea and vomiting, and this in turn has decreased the incidence of anticipatory emesis.

Thermoregulation and nausea

The major symptoms of motion sickness are well known and include facial pallor, nausea and vomiting, and sweating, but it is poorly recognized that they actually reflect severely perturbed thermoregulation. Thus, the purpose of this chapter is to present and discuss existing data related to this subject.

Postoperative nausea and vomiting

Current Opinion in Anaesthesiology, 1999
Worldwide, approximately 80-100 million surgical procedures are performed under general anaesthesia each year. Despite major advances in surgical techniques and the introduction of new anaesthetic agents with reduced emetogenicity, the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (20-30%) has remained largely unchanged over the past few decades ...
