Desert labyrinth: lines, landscape and meaning at Nazca, Peru

Antiquity, 2012
The shapes drawn out by the famous Nazca lines in the Peruvian desert are at their most evident from the air—giving rise to some famously fantastic theories about their origin. The new understanding offered here is the result of a piece of straightforward brilliance on the part of our authors: get down on the ground, where the original users were, and ...

Resistivity and Georadar Survey on the Nazca Lines

Proceedings, 2012
The investigation of shallow structures beneath the Nazca lines aims at a better understanding of the alteration and weathering processes of the desert soils. Suitable geophysical, mineralogical, geochemical, and geotechnical methods should be identified.

New evidence for the date of the Nazca lines

Antiquity, 1991
Surface features that possess no useful stratigraphy and are not, by their own nature, informative about their age, are notoriously hard to date. A study of associations now defines with good confidence the dates of the surface arrangements of stones and of cleared areas that make up some of the celebrated Nazca lines, Peru.

Nazca Lines by La ordering in La2/3−xLi3xTiO3 ion-conductive perovskite

Applied Physics Letters, 2012
We report an unique planar defect that draws the Nazca Lines in epitaxially grown La2/3−xLi3xTiO3 (LLTO) (x ≈ 0.11) ion-conductive perovskite. Transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy reveal that the lines are produced by changing the regular arrangement of alternate stacks of La-rich and La-poor layers along the c-axis ...

Petrographical and Geochemical Features Coupled with Geophysical Observations on the Nazca Lines

Proceedings, 2012
Our study investigates geological features and processes in the vicinity of the Nazca lines. We report a geological overview, the results of petrographical and geochemical analysis at a single test site, the interpretation of the sediment provenance and relations with geophysical observations.

Alignment of the Nazca Lines with Mountain Shadows

This article presents an observation suggesting a potential correlation between the Nazca Lines in Peru and the shadows cast by nearby mountains. Specifically, it appears that at a fixed time during sunrise, the sun over the mountains causes shadows to align with different lines as the year progresses.
