Field based spectral reflectance studies to develop NDSI method for snow cover monitoring

Journal of the Indian Society of Remote Sensing, 2002
Snow is highly reflective in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum making it possible to easily distinguish on a satellite image. However, cloud cover and mountain shadows pose a serious problem in the identification of snow in a mountainous region.

Factors Impacting Performance of the NDSI-Based Operational Snow Cover Monitoring Algorithm in Forested Landscapes

2021
<p>In cold regions of the world with significant forest cover, a notable volume of precipitated snow resides under the forest cover. In such regions, snow is an abundant and valuable natural resource and assessing the winter extent of snow precipitation is particularly important for forecasting hydroelectric power potential, managing ...

Estimation of carrying capacity for wild reindeer in Norway by means of the Normalised Difference Snow Index (NDSI)

SPIE Proceedings, 2005
ABSTRACT This study reports the methods used and the results from th e mapping of the wild reindeer range Forollhogna in Central Norway. Landsat 7 ETM and IRS 1C satellite imageries were us ed in the mapping. The spatial resolution of the IRS 1C data was enhanced to 5 meter by merging the panc hromatic and the multi-spectral bands together.

Daily Cloud-Free NDSI Reconstruction Across the Northern Hemisphere Driven by Nonlinear Meteorological Forcing

Persistent cloud contamination in MODIS normalized difference snow index (NDSI) products severely limits reliable snow cover monitoring across the Northern Hemisphere, making effective gap-filling crucial. However, existing approaches often oversimplify snow temporal dynamics and fail to capture the cumulative nature of snow–climate interactions.
