Representation of near-fault pulse-type ground motions
Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration, 2005Near-fault ground motions with long-period pulses have been identified as critical in the design of structures. To aid in the representation of this special type of motion, eight simple pulses that characterize the effects of either the fling-step or forward-directivity are considered.

A Mathematical Representation of Near-Fault Ground Motions
Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2003A simple, yet effective, analytical model is proposed for the representation of near-field strong ground motions. The model adequately describes the impulsive character of near-fault ground motions both qualitatively and quantitatively. In addition, it can be used to analytically reproduce empirical observations that are based on available near-source ...

Performance of sliding systems under near-fault motions
Nuclear Engineering and Design, 2001Response of structures supported on the sliding systems under near-fault earthquake ground motion is investigated. The fault normal and parallel components are applied in two horizontal direction of the system. The superstructure is considered to be rigid and the frictional forces mobilized at the interface of the sliding system are assumed to be ...

Reliability of semi-active seismic isolation under near-fault earthquakes
Mechanical systems and signal processing, 2019Structural control can be used for protecting buildings and its vibration-sensitive contents from earthquakes. Seismic isolation is a passive control system that lowers effective earthquake forces by utilizing flexible bearings.

Reversed-Polarity Secondary Deformation Structures Near Fault Stepovers
Journal of Applied Mechanics, 2012We study volumetric deformation structures in stepover regions using numerical simulations and field observations, with a focus on small-scale features near the ends of rupture segments that have opposite-polarity from the larger-scale structures that characterize the overall stepover region. The reversed-polarity small-scale structures are interpreted
