Fractal characterization and frequency properties of near-fault ground motions
Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration, 2013This study explores the irregularity and complexity of strong earthquake ground motions from the perspective of fractal geometry, and constructs a relation with the frequency content of the ground motions. The box-counting fractal dimensions and five representative period parameters of near-fault ground motions from the Chi-Chi and Northridge ...

Estimating Permanent Ground Displacement from Near-Fault Strong-Motion Accelerograms
Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2007This study presents a three-phase algorithm that uses the discrete wavelet transform (dwt) to make the baseline correction to near-fault ground-motion accelerogram and to estimate permanent ground displacement. The developed algorithm is applied to the near-fault ground-motion data collected from the 1999 Chi- Chi, Taiwan, earthquake.

Seismic Site Response for Near-Fault Forward Directivity Ground Motions
Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 2006Forward directivity effects in the near-fault region produce pulse-type motions that differ significantly from ordinary ground motions that occur at greater distances from the causative fault. Current code site factors are based on empirical observations and analyses involving less intense nonpulse ordinary ground motions.

On Near‐Fault Ground Motion Characteristics Through Multi‐Scale Method
Chinese Journal of Geophysics, 2013AbstractGround motion recorded in near‐fault regions that possesses long‐period pulse is a special destructive ground motion. For further research on the constituent of low‐frequency component and its pulse characteristics, a decomposition method based on multi‐scale analysis method in wavelet theory is proposed.

Response Modeling of Scoured Bridges under Near-Fault Ground Motions
Earth and Space 2014, 2015This paper identifies near-fault pulse and non-pulse like ground motions based on the relative energy of velocity pulse and the peak velocity of pulse. An ANOVA analysis is performed to distinguish between main characteristics of pulse and nonpulse like ground motions, suggesting that the PGV-to-PGA ratio, energy, and peak displacement of pulse like ...

Strength reduction factors for near-fault forward-directivity ground motions
Engineering Structures, 2010Abstract The seismic design of structures located close to active faults must account for the special characteristics of ground motions in the near-fault region, in particular when these motions contain forward directivity (FD) effects. FD effects result in short duration motions with intense velocity pulses.

Dynamic responses of bridges subjected to near‐fault ground motions
Journal of the Chinese Institute of Engineers, 2000Abstract The motivation of this paper is to study the dynamic behavior of bridge structural systems subjected to both near‐fault and far‐field ground motions. A highway bridge containing a hinge supported continuous girder with six concrete piers was selected for this study.
