Influence of high-pass filtering of near-fault earthquake record on the responses of base-isolated building

Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, 2020
Abstract Filtering is one of the critical steps of earthquake ground motion processing before its application to engineering practice, and high-pass filtering is particularly important due to rich contents of low frequency in ground motion signals.

Damage potential of near-fault records: sliding displacement against conventional “Intensity Measures”

Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering, 2012
The potential of a particular ground accelerogram to inflict damage to asymmetric strongly-inelastic systems is studied in the paper. An idealised analogue, the rigid block with frictional contact on an inclined base, is adopted as the generic representation of such systems.

A predictive model for fling-step in near-fault ground motions based on recordings and simulations

Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, 2016
Abstract We identify potential data sources for fling-step and discuss their value, compile a dataset of simulated and recorded ground motions containing fling, extract fling pulses from these ground motions, and derive a predictive model for fling amplitude and period that is compared to existing empirical models.

Rupture process of the 2004 Parkfield earthquake from near‐fault seismic waveform and geodetic records

Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 2008
The 28 September 2004 Parkfield earthquake, arguably the best recorded earthquake ever, allows for detailed investigation of finite‐source models and their resolution. We have developed finite‐source models using GPS and interferometric synthetic aperture radar geodetic data and seismic strong motion waveform data (f ≤ 0.5 Hz) both independently and ...

Definition of a model for the damping modification factor for near-fault records

2013
Damping modification factors (DMF) are scaling factors to be applied to the 5% damped spectral ordinates to take into account damping values higher or lower than the nominal values of 5% of critical. DMF have been already introduced in several seismic codes.

ANALYSIS OF NEAR-FAULT SITE RESPONSE BASED ON DOWNHOLE ARRAY RECORDS

Local soil conditions can significantly affect the site seismic response, thus having great impact on the dynamic behaviour of lifelines and infrastructure near faults during earthquakes. In order to improve the prediction of seismic site response as well as input motions for seismic design of lifeline facilities in fault zones, insights for ...

Elastic and inelastic systems under near-fault seismic shaking: acceleration records versus optimally-fitted wavelets

Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering, 2014
Four idealised dynamic systems, which are used as analogues in earthquake and geotechnical engineering, are studied: an elastic single-degree-of-freedom (sdof) oscillator; an elastic-perfectly-plastic sdof oscillator; a rigid block resting in simple frictional contact on a horizontal base; and a rigid block resting on a sloping plane.

New Baseline Correction Method for Near-Fault Ground-Motion Records Based on Continuous Wavelet Transform

Seismological Research Letters
Abstract On 6 February 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck south-central Türkiye. It was followed by many aftershocks, the largest of which was a magnitude 7.5 aftershock. This earthquake caused considerable loss of life and property. Numerous near-fault ground-motion records were collected during the 2023 Türkiye earthquake.

Evaluation of drift demands in existing steel frames under as-recorded far-field and near-fault mainshock–aftershock seismic sequences

Engineering Structures, 2011
Abstract This paper presents results of a study aimed at evaluating the effect of aftershocks in steel framed buildings. For that purpose, three frame models representing existing steel moment-resisting frames were subjected to a set of as-recorded mainshock–aftershock seismic sequences.
