Mid-American Highway Bridge Response to Near-field Ground Motions from New Madrid Seismic Zone

open access: yes, 2006
The 1999 Taiwan earthquake caused severe damages of many highway bridges under near-field ground motions. In the Central and Eastern United States, most bridges are similar in structure type to those seen in Taiwan, although their soil deposits and rock ...

Numerical simulation of ground motions and damage of bridge in near field of the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake fault [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This paper investigates the consequences of so called fling-step characteristics of near-field ground motions, which is originated by the permanent ground deformations due to a fault, on the damage of bridge caused by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake (MJMA 7.

The Influence of near-Fault Ground Motions on the Seismic Response of Reinforced Concrete Frame

open access: yes, 2011
This paper examined the engineering characteristics of the near-fault ground motion. The four-story reinforced concrete frame was designed under Code for seismic design of building (GB50011-2010).The SAP2000 software was applied to model it, and the ...

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Microstructure Evolution of a VMnFeCoNi High‐Entropy Alloy After Synthesis, Swaging, and Annealing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The synthesis and processing (rotary swaging and annealing) of the novel VMnFeCoNi alloy is investigated, alongside the estimation of the grain size effect on hardness. Analysis of a wide grain size range of recrystallized microstructures (12–210 µm) reveals a low annealing twin density.

Impact of Far- and Near-Field Records on the Seismic Fragility of Steel Storage Tanks

open access: yesApplied Mechanics
Liquid-storage tanks are critical components in industrial plants, especially during seismic events. Tank failures can cause significant economic losses, operational disruptions, and environmental damage.

Creep‐Induced Microstructural Evolution in an A2‐B2 Superalloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A 27.3Ta‐27.3Mo‐27.3Ti‐8Cr‐10Al (at.%) refractory high‐entropy alloy with precipitation‐strengthened A2‐B2 microstructure was studied by creep tests at 1030°C, which demonstrate a transition in deformation mechanisms in the range of 100–150 MPa applied stress. This is associated with changes in dislocation–precipitate interactions. Relevant deformation

Optimization of the Production of Rubber Compounds Using Mathematical Models

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Rubber compounds were mixed in a batch internal mixer, and symbolic regression was used to derive mathematical models linking recipe and process parameters to ram path, torque, and mixing quality (incorporation, dispersion, distribution). Subsequent optimization with evolutionary algorithms identified operating conditions that reduce specific energy ...

Soft Mechanical‐Electrical Logic Using Liquid Metal‐Filled 3D‐Printed Architectures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We present 3D‐printed soft mechanical–electrical logic elements that use liquid metal–filled silicone tubes actuated by thermoplastic polyurethane/polylactic acid (TPU/PLA) architectures to produce Boolean operations. Complementary normally open and normally closed unit cells perform repeatable binary transitions and can be combined into more complex ...

Near-Field Ground Motion Modal versus Wave Propagation Analysis

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2010
The response spectrum generally provides a good estimate of the global displacement and acceleration demand of far-field ground motion on a structure. However, it does not provide accurate information on the local shape or internal deformation of the response of the structure.
