A generalised-Lagrangian-mean model of the interactions between near-inertial waves and mean flow [PDF]
Wind forcing of the ocean generates a spectrum of inertia–gravity waves that is sharply peaked near the local inertial (or Coriolis) frequency. The corresponding near-inertial waves (NIWs) are highly energetic and play a significant role in the slow ...

A comparison between vertical motions measured by ADCP and inferred from temperature data [PDF]
Combined vertical current (w) and thermistor string data demonstrate that high-, near-buoyancy frequency internal "wave" trains along a pycnocline in a flat-bottom shelf sea consist for 2 periods of a dominant mode-1 non-linear part, while ...

Wind‐generated near‐inertial internal waves (NIWs) are characterized by dominant long‐range equatorward radiation due to the gradient of the planetary vorticity, known as the β‐refraction effect.

Bulk Energization of Electrons in Solar Flares by Alfv\'en Waves
Bulk energization of electrons to $10\,-\,20\,$keV in solar flares is attributed to dissipation of Alfv\'en waves that transport energy and potential downward to an acceleration region near the chromosphere.

Need for a subtropical wind profiling system [PDF]
The purpose is to point out the need for, and the benefit that can be derived from, a national wind profiling facility located in the subtropics. At present no such facility exists.

Coastal-Trapped Waves and Tides at Near-Inertial Frequencies
The nature of the transition in coastal-trapped wave behavior from trapped, subinertial modes to imperfectly trapped, superinertial waves (not modes), is investigated. When formulated purely in terms of pressure, the coastal-trapped wave eigenvalue problem admits a spurious inertial mode that distorts numerical calculations at nearby frequencies.

Generation of shock waves in dense plasmas by high-intensity laser pulses
When intense short-pulse laser beams (I > 1022 W/m2, τ < 20 ps) interact with high density plasmas, strong shock waves are launched. These shock waves may be generated by a range of processes, and the relative significance of the various mechanisms ...

Characteristics and energy rays of equatorially trapped, zonally symmetric internal waves
Characteristic curves of partial differential equations (PDEs) in general differ from short wave energy rays. We give conditions for linear, two dimensional second order PDEs that guarantee an exact correspondence between characteristics and energy rays.
