Observations of Near-Inertial Waves in a Front
Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1984Abstract Near-inertial with horizontal scales ∼O(10 km) dominate profiles of velocity finestructure collected in the North Pacific Subtropical Front during January 1980. Considerable spatial variability is observed. Two features in particular contain most of the energy: a 20 cm s−1 amplitude (λz = 100 m) wave on the warm edge of the front propagating ...

Near-inertial waves and deep ocean mixing
Physica Scripta, 2013For the existing pattern of global oceanic circulation to exist, there should be sufficiently strong turbulent mixing in the abyssal ocean, the mechanisms of which are not well understood as yet. The review discusses a plausible mechanism of deep ocean mixing caused by near-inertial waves in the abyssal ocean.

Near-inertial waves (NIWs) in the oceans have multiple generation mechanisms. Typhoons with strong wind forcing are one of the major sources of NIWs; however, the kinetic energy (KE) exchange between NIWs and mesoscale eddies/internal tides during the ...

Near‐inertial waves on the “nontraditional” β plane
Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2005Propagation of linear near‐inertial waves on the β plane is considered, taking into account the horizontal component of the Earth's rotation, . (Terms, effects etc., due to this component will be referred to as “nontraditional,” for brevity.) It is shown that the combined effect of β and changes the dynamics in a fundamental way.

Trapped, near‐inertial waves and enhanced chlorophyll distributions
Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1995Waves with near‐inertial frequencies were observed along a front associated with a large mesoscale feature in the Sargasso Sea during the late summer of 1987. High subsurface chlorophyll concentrations occurred on the edge of this front, coincident with the wave packets.

Based on mooring observations from October 10 to 5 November 2017 at four stations in the Northwestern Pacific, the characteristics of four strong near‐inertial wave (NIW) packets generated by the typhoon Lan were examined.

Near-inertial internal waves in the Black Sea
2021<p>The Black Sea is practically tideless basin where inertial variability dominates the energy spectra at the high-frequency band f > 1 day-1. &#160;The near-inertial internal waves are easier to infer from the observational data in the absence of the tidal motions.

Deep ocean mixing by near-inertial waves
2010We consider a novel mechanism of deep ocean mixing caused by breaking of near inertial waves propagating poleward beyond the inertial latitude. On the non-traditional beta plane a noticeable portion of incident inertial waves is not reflected at the inertial latitude but goes through; these waves propagate several hundred kilometers further poleward ...

An improved model of near-inertial wave dynamics
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2019The YBJ equation (Young & Ben Jelloul, J. Marine Res., vol. 55, 1997, pp. 735–766) provides a phase-averaged description of the propagation of near-inertial waves (NIWs) through a geostrophic flow. YBJ is obtained via an asymptotic expansion based on the limit $\mathit{Bu}\rightarrow 0$, where $\mathit{Bu}$ is the Burger number of the NIWs. Here we

Near-inertial wave propagation in geostrophic shear
Deep Sea Research Part B. Oceanographic Literature Review, 1985Abstract An approximate dispersion relation for near-inertial internal waves propagating in geostrophic shear is formulated that includes straining by the mean flow shear. Near-inertial and geostrophic motions have similar horizontal scales in the ocean.
