Near-Inertial Wave Propagation in the Western Arctic

Journal of Physical Oceanography, 2005
Abstract From October 1997 through October 1998, the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic (SHEBA) ice camp drifted across the western Arctic Ocean, from the central Canada Basin over the Northwind Ridge and across the Chukchi Cap. During much of this period, the velocity and shear fields in the upper ocean were monitored by Doppler sonar ...

Near-inertial wave propagation in geostrophic shear

Deep Sea Research Part B. Oceanographic Literature Review, 1985
Abstract An approximate dispersion relation for near-inertial internal waves propagating in geostrophic shear is formulated that includes straining by the mean flow shear. Near-inertial and geostrophic motions have similar horizontal scales in the ocean.

Trapped, near‐inertial waves and enhanced chlorophyll distributions

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1995
Waves with near‐inertial frequencies were observed along a front associated with a large mesoscale feature in the Sargasso Sea during the late summer of 1987. High subsurface chlorophyll concentrations occurred on the edge of this front, coincident with the wave packets.

The Structure of Near-Inertial Waves during Ocean Storms

Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1995
Abstract Current meter data from two sites were analyzed for near-inertial motions generated by storm during the ten-month period of the Ocean Storms Experiment in the northeast Pacific Ocean. The most striking feature of the inertial wave response to storms was the almost instantaneous generation of waves in the mixed layer, followed by a gradual ...

Low-Mode Near-Inertial Wave Generation

Journal of Physical Oceanography
Abstract Near-inertial currents can be generated by abrupt shifts in wind. Some of these currents project onto low-mode near-inertial waves (NIWs), which can travel thousands of kilometers. Here, a reduced-physics model [the coupled-mode shallow water (CSW) model] is proposed with the goal of simulating global low-

Observations of Persistent Mixing and Near-Inertial Internal Waves

Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1986
Abstract Repeated profiles of microstructure and shear alongside a drogued buoy show a 10 m thick mixing zone at the same depth as a near-inertial feature. Because the profile was diffusively stable and free of thermohaline intrusions, internal wave breakdown is the only mechanism capable of producing mixing.

Dynamics of Internal Tides and Near-Inertial Internal Waves

2006
Abstract : The long term goal of the research project is the understanding of the oceanic internal gravity wave field as a balance of generation, transfer and dissipation processes, and the construction of a numerical dynamical model (called Internal Wave Action Model, IWAM) that will predict changes of the internal wave field in response to changes in
