The Impact of Oceanic Near-Inertial Waves on Climate [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2013
Abstract The Community Climate System Model, version 4 (CCSM4) is used to assess the climate impact of wind-generated near-inertial waves (NIWs). Even with high-frequency coupling, CCSM4 underestimates the strength of NIWs, so that a parameterization for NIWs is developed and included into CCSM4.

A conceptual view on inertial internal waves in relation to the subinertial flow on the central west Florida shelf

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2018
The study reported here focuses on inertial internal wave currents on the west Florida midshelf in 50 m depth. In situ observations showed that the seasonal shifts in stratification change both the frequency range of inertial internal waves and their ...

Near-Inertial Waves in Strongly Baroclinic Currents

open access: yesJournal of Physical Oceanography, 2013
Abstract An analysis and physical interpretation of near-inertial waves (NIWs) propagating perpendicular to a steady, two-dimensional, strongly baroclinic, geostrophic current are presented. The analysis is appropriate for geostrophic currents with order-one Richardson numbers such as those associated with fronts experiencing strong ...

Frequency Shift of Near-Inertial Waves in the South China Sea

open access: yes, 2020
Despite sufficient wind forcing, internal waves in the South China Sea do not exhibit the strong near-inertial wave (NIW) peak that is typical in most of the world oceans.

Resistance Rapid Heating of Aluminum Coatings in an Extreme High Vacuum–Adequate Atmosphere for Hot Stamping

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The subject of this work is the development of a corrosion‐protective coating on steel sheets for form hardening. Rapid heating in an extreme high vacuum (XHV)‐adequate atmosphere is a useful method to prevent oxidation during alloying of 22MnB5 and aluminum to obtain a metallurgical bonding.

A simple model of ultrasound propagation in a cavitating liquid. Part II: Primary Bjerknes force and bubble structures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In a companion paper, a reduced model for propagation of acoustic waves in a cloud of inertial cavitation bubbles was proposed. The wave attenuation was calculated directly from the energy dissipated by a single bubble, the latter being estimated ...

Tidal inertial waves in the differentially rotating convective envelopes of low-mass stars - I. Free oscillation modes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Star-planet tidal interactions may result in the excitation of inertial waves in the convective region of stars. In low-mass stars, their dissipation plays a prominent role in the long-term orbital evolution of short-period planets.

Development of Sustainable MgO–C Refractories Using MgO–C Recyclates and a Novel Eco‐Friendly Fructose–Tannin Binder Crosslinked With Citric Acid

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study develops sustainable MgO–C refractories using recycled materials and eco‐friendly fructose–tannin binders. The enhanced performance of citric acid as a cross‐linker and functional additives on mechanical and thermomechanical properties was examined. Characterization included strength tests, immersion trials, and microstructural and inclusion

Revisiting Tide‐Induced Near‐Field Mixing in the Abyssal Ocean

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Vertical two‐dimensional numerical experiments incorporating Garrett‐Munk (GM) internal waves are conducted to investigate tide‐induced near‐field mixing over a finite‐amplitude sinusoidal seafloor, conventionally attributed to the breaking of high ...
