False positives and false negatives in functional near-infrared spectroscopy: issues, challenges, and the way forward

open access: yesNeurophotonics, 2016
. We highlight a significant problem that needs to be considered and addressed when performing functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) studies, namely the possibility of inadvertently measuring fNIRS hemodynamic responses that are not due to ...

Model for quantitative tip-enhanced spectroscopy and the extraction of nanoscale-resolved optical constants

open access: yes, 2014
Near-field infrared spectroscopy by elastic scattering of light from a probe tip resolves optical contrasts in materials at dramatically sub-wavelength scales across a broad energy range, with the demonstrated capacity for chemical identification at the ...

High-resolution UKIRT observations of circumnuclear star formation in M100 [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
We present high-resolution, near-infrared imaging of the circumnuclear region of the barred spiral galaxy M100 (=NGC 4321), accompanied by near-infrared spectroscopy.

WIRELESS DISTRIBUTED ACQUISITION SYSTEM FOR NEAR INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY – WDA-NIRS [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Innovative Optical Health Sciences, 2013
The wireless distributed acquisition system for near infrared spectroscopy (WDA-NIRS) is a portable, ultra-compact, continuous wave (CW) NIRS system. Its main advantage is that it allows continuous synchronized multi-site hemodynamic monitoring.

Physical Characterization of Warm Spitzer-observed Near-Earth Objects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Near-infrared spectroscopy of Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) connects diagnostic spectral features to specific surface mineralogies. The combination of spectroscopy with albedos and diameters derived from thermal infrared observations can increase the ...

A Different Perspective on the Solid Lubrication Performance of Black Phosphorous: Friend or Foe?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Researchers investigate black phosphorous (BP) as a standalone solid lubricant coating through ball‐on‐disc linear‐reciprocating sliding experiments in dry conditions. Testing on different metals shows BP doesn't universally reduce friction and wear. However, it achieves 33% friction reduction on rougher iron surfaces and 23% wear reduction on aluminum.

Microfluidic Cuvette for Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

open access: yesProceedings
We intend to develop an in situ near-infrared spectroscopic solution for monitoring the nutrient composition (e.g., lactate concentration) in microfluidic channels of organ-on-chip devices.

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy of McNeil's Nebula Object

open access: yes, 2004
We present 0.8-5.2 micron spectroscopy of the compact source at the base of a variable nebula (McNeil's Nebula Object) in the Lynds 1630 dark cloud that went into outburst in late 2003.

Germanium quantum dots: Optical properties and synthesis [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
Three different size distributions of Ge quantum dots (>~200, 110, and 60 Å) have been synthesized via the ultrasonic mediated reduction of mixtures of chlorogermanes and organochlorogermanes (or organochlorosilanes) by a colloidal sodium/potassium alloy
