In this paper, a new automated approach for the extraction of aboveground circular storage structures from near-nadir very high resolution satellite imagery is proposed. The approach focuses on the cast shadows of the circular structures and splits the boundaries of the shadow regions into curved segments using the chord-to-point distance accumulation ...

This paper introduces the use of an airborne interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) to estimate water surface decorrelation times at Ka-Band. Such an assessment is directly relevant to the upcoming Surface Water and Ocean Topography mission, especially for surface water bodies such as lakes and rivers since the surface decorrelation may limit

The "Sea surface KInematics Multiscale monitoring" (SKIM) concept is a satellite mission designed to measure the world ocean surface currents, ice drift and ocean waves at spatial scales of 40 km [1] . It has been recently selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) as a finalist of the Earth Explorer 9 (EE9) call of proposal alongside with the FORUM ...

A Study of Sea Surface Wind Vector Estimation From Near-Nadiral Cross-Track-Scanned Backscatter Data
IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, 2013The possibility of recovering sea surface wind vectors from near-nadiral cross-track Ku- or Ka-band backscatter measurements using a measuring geometry similar to that of the Airborne Precipitation Radar 2 is discussed. The cross-track scanning geometry includes diversity in both elevation and azimuth angles, allowing the possibility of both wind speed

Near-Nadir Wind Estimation Over Water with Airborne Precipitation Radar
2013Remote sensing of sea surface wind by means of a radar altimeter is based on specular returns from water surface. A wind retrieval algorithm deriving the wind speed from the NRCS at nadir incidence angle is used in that case.

In order to support future altimetry space missions in Ka-band, an airborne campaign has been realized with the ONERA BUSARD platform and its DRIVE radar. The particularity of this campaign is the line of sight geometry, with very steep incidence angles, using a Ka-band SAR interferometer instrument.

This paper first examines the extension of two-frequency, or Δk, near-nadir remote sensing techniques to off-nadir radar altimetry. A different approach to sea state sensing is investigated which appears to offer much higher accuracy. The second section examines the Δk method of sensing rough-surface area correlation or ocean wavenumber spectrum.
