In this note we point out a not easily fillable gap in the proof of a major result in Chebyshev approximations on an interval [α, β]. Tornheim developed a theory for approximation by families unisolvent of degree n (n-parameter families), which was extended by Rice to families unisolvent of variable degree.

AbstractIn this section, David Hume defends a compatibilist account of the relation between human freedom and necessary laws of human nature. The compatibilism itself is entirely unremarkable for a thinker influenced by the mechanist tradition; compatibilist interpretations of one form or another are offered by many mechanical philosophers, especially ...

Metaphysical necessity is not logical necessity
Philosophical Studies, 1981It is this shared view of Kripke and Putnam that I wish to discuss, putting aside the second claim as to the metaphysical or ontological character of the necessity of such claims as 'Water is H2 O'. In the two sections which follow I shall argue that Kripke and Putnam are wrong in their shared view of the scope of metaphysical necessities; I shall ...

God, Necessity, and Necessities
In this essay, we discuss the relationship between God and the modal profile of the states of affairs. There is a well-known dilemma about this relationship: both the view that the necessity and the possibility of the states of affairs are dependent on God and the view that they are not dependent have unpalatable consequences.Ciro De Florio, Aldo Frigerio

PART I IT might reasonably be expected, in questions, which have been canvassed and disputed with great eagerness, since the first origin of science and philosophy, that the meaning of all the terms, at least, should have been agreed upon among the disputants; and...

This paper explores conditions under which necessity, Lp, can be defined in terms of non-contingency, \(\Delta\) p (where \(\Delta\) \(p\equiv Lp\vee L\sim p\) must always be true). For systems containing T a defnition is easy, viz. \(L\alpha\) \(=_{df}\alpha \&\Delta \alpha\), because of the axiom Lp\(\supset p\).

The concept of “necessity of thought” plays a central role in Dag Prawitz’s essay “Logical Consequence from a Constructivist Point of View”. The theme is later developed in various articles devoted to the notion of valid inference. In Sect. 4.1 I explain how the notion of necessity of thought emerges from Prawitz’s analysis of logical consequence.
