Postoperative Hemoglobin and Transfusion Rates Do Not Influence Revision of Head and Neck Free Flap in a Cohort of 259 Patients

open access: yesHead &Neck, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Recent literature advocates restrictive transfusion thresholds (Hb < 7 g/dL). The aim of this study was to evaluate if postoperative hemoglobin levels and transfusions influence Free Flap Revision (FFR). Methods This single center retrospective study included all patients who underwent head and neck surgery with free flap ...

Different gut microbiome dysbioses impact the evolutionary fate of hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae

open access: yesiMeta, EarlyView.
Transient exposure to ampicillin results in restructuring of microbiota to favor oxygen‐tolerant bacteria, whereas osmotic laxative perturbation preserves Bacteriodota. Ampicillin‐ but not laxative‐exposed environment favors establishment of rmpA phase variants that lost hypermucoviscosity but short‐chain fatty acids present in the laxative‐exposed gut

Ultrasonic Image Characteristics of Palatine Tonsils in Healthy Children and Analysis of Factors Influencing Image Quality

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Ultrasound, Volume 53, Issue 3, Page 436-444, March/April 2025.
The ultrasound detection rate of the palatine tonsils in children was good. There are characteristic ultrasonic image manifestations. Tonsil ultrasound image quality is affected by individual and local factors. ABSTRACT Objective To explore the ultrasonic image characteristics of palatine tonsils in healthy children and the factors affecting image ...

Characteristics of ascitic fluid and diagnosis of bacterial peritonitis in malignant ascites: An observational study

open access: yesJournal of Hospital Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Bacterial peritonitis in patients with malignant ascites (BP‐MA) is an understudied, high‐mortality condition. While ascitic polymorphonuclear (PMN) cell count ≥ 250 cells/mm3 defines the diagnosis of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) in patients with cirrhosis, an ascitic fluid parameter for the diagnosis of BP‐MA has not ...

Transoral Ultrasound in the Diagnostic Workup of Peritonsillar Abscess—A Randomized Clinical Trial

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
Peritonsillar abscess frequently mimics peritonsillar cellulitis, exposing many patients to unnecessary and often painful blind needle aspirations. In this multicenter randomized clinical trial of 95 patients, adding transoral ultrasound to standard examination reduced needle aspiration attempts by nearly one third.
