Piercing soft solids: A mechanical theory for needle insertion [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
In this paper we investigate the mechanical problem of piercing a soft solid body with a needle. This phenomenon is controlled by the critical condition of needle insertion. Needle insertion involves physical and geometrical nonlinearities and a complex failure mechanism.

Amplification‐Free, Sequencing‐Free, Detection of Viral RNAs with Variant Specification by Discrete Nanocounting

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Integrating selective RNA shortcut, targeted gene isolation, and micro‐arrayed nanoimaging, the NanoPick‐array platform excels in detecting severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) at just 60 copies µL−1 and accurately differentiating variants at the single‐nucleotide level. It ensures 100% accuracy for samples with cycle threshold (

Optimal Needle Diameter, Shape, and Path in Autonomous Suturing [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Needle shape, diameter, and path are critical parameters that directly affect suture depth and tissue trauma in autonomous suturing. This paper presents an optimization-based approach to specify these parameters. Given clinical suturing guidelines, a kinematic model of needle-tissue interaction was developed to quantify suture parameters and ...

Constructing Covalent Organic Polymers through Dative B─N Bonds: Synthesis, Single Crystal Structures, and Physical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Dynamic linkages are highly attractive in preparing single crystals of covalent organic polymers (COPs). Here, single crystals of two COPs CityU‐15 and CityU‐16 based on reversible B─N bonds are constructed using tetra(4‐pyridyl)tetrathiafulvalene and tetra(4‐pyridyl)porphine as monomers.

Bioelement contents in the planting stock tissues of Norway spruce (Picea abies /L./ Karst.) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) after excessive N and Mg fertilization

open access: yesActa Universitatis Agriculturae et Silviculturae Mendelianae Brunensis, 2008
The paper informs of N, P, K, Ca and Mg-contents in the selected organs (tissues) of 4-year old Norway spruce (Picea abies /L./ Karst.) and 3-year old European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) transplants after two years of Mg fertilization (100 kg Mg.ha−1 ...

Direct Ink Writing of Conductive Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This review examines the use of direct ink writing (DIW) for fabricating conductive hydrogels with customizable 3D structures. It outlines the rheological requirements for successful DIW, followed by an exploration of the materials and ink formulations used to impart electronic and/or ionic conductivity to hydrogels while maintaining printability ...

HoloInjection: augmented reality support for CT-guided spinal needle injections

open access: yesHealthcare Technology Letters, 2019
The correct placement of needles is decisive for the success of many minimally-invasive interventions and therapies. These needle insertions are usually only guided by radiological imaging and can benefit from additional navigation support.
