Learning a novel polarity item

open access: yes
Negative Polarity Items (NPIs) are characterized by a polarity-sensitive use, restricted to downward entailing (DE) environments, mostly negative environments.

On negative Sprites and the Polarity Paradox

open access: yes, 2019
Energetic positive and negative cloud‐to‐ground (CG) flashes are both capable of producing sprites. Negative CGs typically outnumber the positive ones by 10 to 1.

Nanoconfinement‐Induced Second‐Harmonic Circular Dichroism via Chirality–Ferroelectric Coupling

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Nanoconfinement of a ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal within a chiral nanoporous sponge yields an enhanced second‐harmonic generation circular dichroism (|gSHG–CD| ≈ 1.1). Polarization‐resolved analysis suggests an additional magnetic‐dipole‐associated nonlinear contribution under nanoconfinement, highlighting chirality–ferroelectric coupling as a ...

ATP‐Mediated Bidirectional Communication Between Natural and Artificial Cells for Controlled Bioreactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Establishment of bidirectional communication behavior between natural and artificial cells. The first type of communication from natural dendritic cells to artificial polymeric cells was achieved via ATP release after cell lysis. The released ATP was taken up via gated UV‐controlled permeability increase of the polymeric membrane for performing ...

On negation in yes/no questions in Serbo-Croatian [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The phenomenon discussed in this paper is the so-called expletive negation in negated yes/no questions in Serbo-Croatian. The term expletive negation seems, at this point to be a useful descriptive term for the phenomenon in question. One of the goals of

Advances in Solution‐Processed Textile Triboelectric Nanogenerators: Ink Formation, Processing Strategies, Applications, and Challenges

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Advanced ink systems for solution‐processed textile triboelectric nanogenerators are systematically summarized, spanning conductive, tribo‐negative, and tribo‐positive layers. By connecting ink chemistry, deposition methods, and device function, the present review reveals the key governing principles of solution development and highlights practical ...

Negative Polarity Items and Compound Negatives

open access: yesNegative Polarity Items and Compound Negatives
P(論文) Lift a finger, a red cent, etc. in English mean yubi ippon ugokasu, bita itimon, etc. in Japanese, while mettani, kessite, etc. do not correspond to any English words. Mettani-nai, kessite-nai, etc. are equivalent to English rarely, never, etc. This paper tries to clarify the behavior of these two types of negatives.

Acquiring negative polarity items

open access: yes, 2015
Negative Polarity Items (NPIs) are words or expressions that exhibit a restricted distribution to certain negative contexts only. For example, yet is an NPI and must appear in the scope of a negation: Mary has *(not) finished yet. The existence of NPIs such as yet gives rise to a learnability problem for language-acquiring children.

Learning a polarity sensitive item in a novel language

open access: yes
This is a continuation of the project pre-registred in https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/WRM7H. We reproduce Experiment 1A in the previous preregistration, this time using a fully artificial language.
