Negative skin friction on pile groups

International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1990
AbstractA numerical procedure is presented for the downdrag analysis of group piles which penetrate a consolidating upper soil layer to socket into a firm bearing stratum of finite stiffness. The settlement of the consolidating upper soil layer under a surcharge load is estimated using Terzaghi's one‐dimensional consolidation theory.

Negative skin friction on rigid and deformable piles

Computers and Geotechnics, 1996
Abstract A simple numerical scheme is used to evaluate the magnitude and form of the negative skin friction on both rigid (e.g. concrete) and deformable (e.g. gravel) piles. The study includes piles extended to bedrock as well as the socalled floating piles.

Negative Skin Friction on Piles: State of the Art

2021
Pile foundation experiences negative skin friction when the surrounding soil settles more than the pile, which induces an increased compressive force on piles, called drag load, and it also induces settlement in pile called down drag. The drag load acting on the pile reduces shaft capacity to resist the ultimate load. Geotechnical engineers had to deal

Negative skin friction and the neutral plane

Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 1994
Current views indicate that negative skin friction on piles can be mobilized at small relative deformations and should be considered in all designs, primarily for serviceability conditions. An elastic-plastic closed-form solution is presented that permits an estimate of down-drag forces and the location of the neutral plane.

Field Investigation of Influences of Load on Pile Top on Negative Skin Friction Behaviors

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Research, 2011
In order to study influences of applied load on pile top on the negative skin friction behaviors of piles, field investigations of negative skin friction behaviors of three identical piles with different loads on pile top are made in the same site.

Evaluation of Negative Skin Friction on Bridge Abutment Piles

DFI Journal The Journal of the Deep Foundations Institute, 2021
Piles are used to transfer loads of structures to deeper and stronger soil layers through skin friction and/or end bearing. Surcharge loads, site grading, or dewatering may induce downward movement of soil adjacent to piles installed in a compressible medium.

Pile Groups under Negative Skin Friction

Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1993
This paper describes a simplified hybrid load‐transfer approach for analyzing the response of pile groups under negative skin friction. The response of single piles is evaluated by a discrete‐element approach. The interaction between piles in a group bearing on a Stifter stratum is considered using a modified form of Mindlin's analytical point‐load ...
