Effect of Laser Deoxidation on Adhesive‐Bonded Aluminum in an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser ablation of aluminum under oxygen‐free conditions. The goal is to produce oxide‐free substrates that enable improved adhesive bonding with epoxy. Optimized laser parameters (90% overlap, 300 µJ) combined with oxide‐free substrates result in the highest tensile strength of the adhesive bond.

Negative thermal expansion in single-component systems with isotropic interactions

open access: yes, 2008
We have devised an isotropic interaction potential that gives rise to negative thermal expansion (NTE) behavior in equilibrium many-particle systems in both two and three dimensions over a wide temperature and pressure range (including zero pressure). An

Population of Nonmetallic Inclusions in Liquid High‐Silicon Electrical Steel in Contact With MgO–C Refractories Based on Recyclates and Environmentally Friendly Binders

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The formation of nonmetallic inclusions (NMIs) was investigated in this study, carrying out immersion tests for 30 min at a temperature of 1600°C with liquid high‐silicon electrical steel (Si ≈ 3 mass‐%) and different MgO–C refractories. Conventional MgO–C refractories were considered, as well as MgO–C refractories containing MgO–C recyclate and ...

Investigation of Oxygen‐Free Wetting Behavior of Aluminum on Copper via Molecular Dynamics Simulations and Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The wettability of aluminum droplets (Al) on different copper substrates (Cu), where liquid Al spreads on solid Cu surfaces to form a liquid–solid interface, is studied numerically and experimentally. The experimental and numerical results show good agreement in the fast‐spreading regime.

Negative Thermal Expansivity of Ice: Comparison of the Monatomic mW Model with the All-Atom TIP4P/2005 Water Model

open access: yesCrystals, 2019
We calculate the thermal expansivity of ice I for the monatomic mW model using the quasi-harmonic approximation. It is found that the original mW model is unable to reproduce the negative thermal expansivity experimentally observed at low temperatures. A

Dynamic Testing of Cold Gas Sprayed Bipolar Plates–Porous Transport Layer Coating System in Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Through direct application of porous transport layer (PTL) on the bipolar plate (BPP) with thermal spraying, the interfacial contact resistance is improved. With the cold gas sprayed BPP–PTL coating system, a proton exchange membrane water electrolysis cell with a cell voltage of Ucell = 1.9 V can be operated up to i = 2.5 A/cm2 in a dynamic mode ...

Impact of Sustainable Binders Based on Lignin and Collagen on the Volume Stability and Mechanical Properties of MgO‐C Refractories with MgO‐C Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Collagen hydrolysate is evaluated as a sustainable binder for MgO‐C refractories. Its thermally induced cross‐linking and gas release lead to expansion and cracking in large bricks, but tailored batches with lignin, recyclates, or fine graphite improve the gas release while thermal treatment and stability.

Enhanced thermal and mechanical properties of Sr0.2Ba0.8TiO3/Cu composites by introducing Cu2O interface coating

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2019
Ferroelectric ceramic with negative thermal expansion during the phase transformation from T-phase to C-phase can be used as reinforcement to obtain low thermal expansion metal matrix composites.

Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma Deoxidation of Natively Oxide Layer of Copper Powders in a Fluidized Bed

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This paper presents a novel approach to reducing oxide layers on metal powders using low‐temperature hydrogen dielectric barrier discharge plasmas at atmospheric pressure. Unlike conventional hydrogen‐plasma reductions, the powders do not contact the plasma directly.

Thermal expansion, electrical conductivity and hardness of Mn3Zn0.5Sn0.5N/Al composites

open access: yesScience and Engineering of Composite Materials, 2018
Mn3Zn0.5Sn0.5N/Al composites were successfully prepared by sintering at 623 K and 723 K. It is found that the thermal expansion of Al is effectively decreased with the addition of negative thermal expansion material Mn3Zn0.5Sn0.5N, which plays the role ...
