Iflaviruses in arthropods: when small is mighty

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Many arthropod species harbor iflaviruses, which often cause covert (asymptomatic) infections, but may still affect host fitness. We review the impact of iflaviruses on arthropod fitness, immunity, behaviour as well as the iflavirus’ host range, transmission, tissue tropism and the interactions with other microorganisms within arthropods.

Neonicotinoid seed treatments do not consistently reduce insect feeding damage nor increase yields in Maryland soy

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, EarlyView.
We compared soybean plants from untreated and treated seeds across 4 sites and 3 years in Maryland. Neonicotinoid seed treatments (NST) provided little reduction in insect stippling damage and no reduction in chewing damage. NST did not result in increased plant biomass or bean yield. Abstract The use of neonicotinoid insecticides in seed treatments in

Bioinformatic and functional characterisation of Globodera pallida effector genes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Pathogens secrete molecules, termed effectors, to manipulate their host to the benefit of the pathogen. Effectors of plant parasitic nematodes are predicted to have a range of functions such as facilitating invasion, initiation and maintenance of the ...

Host Suitability of Winter Cover Crops for Meloidogyne enterolobii

open access: yesAgronomy
The guava root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne enterolobii) is a highly aggressive species of root-knot nematode that is not manageable with currently existing nematode management methods. This study was conducted to evaluate the suppressive ability of winter

Anthelmintic resistance in sheep nematodes in Australia: a compilation of recent test results

open access: yesAustralian Veterinary Journal, EarlyView.
Objective The results of recent faecal egg count reduction tests (FECRTs) were collated to provide an indication of the prevalence and severity of anthelmintic resistance in sheep nematodes across Australia and of changes in comparison to earlier testing reports.

Soil nematode community responses to prescribed burning in upland moorland: temporal dynamics prevail over fire effects

open access: yesFrontiers in Soil Science
Muirburn is a land management practice of upland Calluna vulgaris-dominated moorland landscapes that uses prescribed burning to maintain vegetation diversity, enhance the nutritional value of vegetation for livestock, and support game management.
