Theory for island induced neoclassical toroidal plasma viscosity in tokamaks

open access: yesNuclear Fusion, 2011
Error fields and resistive magnetohydrodynamic modes are ubiquitous in real tokamaks. They break the toroidal symmetry in | B | in tokamaks. Here, B is the magnetic field.

Effects of neoclassical toroidal viscosity induced by the intrinsic error fields and toroidal field ripple on the toroidal rotation in tokamaks

open access: yesPhysics of Plasmas, 2016
Effects of neoclassical toroidal viscosity (NTV) induced by intrinsic error fields and toroidal field ripple on cocurrent toroidal rotation in H-mode tokamak plasmas are investigated. It is expected that large NTV torque can be localized at the edge region through the 1/ν-regime in the vicinity of Er∼0 in the cocurrent rotating H-mode plasma. Numerical

Peak neoclassical toroidal viscosity at low toroidal rotation in the DIII-D tokamak

open access: yesPhysics of Plasmas, 2011
Observation of a theoretically predicted peak in the neoclassical toroidal viscous (NTV) force as a function of toroidal plasma rotation rate Ω is reported. The NTV was generated by applying n=3 magnetic fields from internal (I-)coils to low Ω plasmas produced with nearly balanced neutral beam injection.

Observation of Plasma Toroidal-Momentum Dissipation by Neoclassical Toroidal Viscosity

Physical Review Letters, 2006
Dissipation of plasma toroidal angular momentum is observed in the National Spherical Torus Experiment due to applied nonaxisymmetric magnetic fields and their plasma-induced increase by resonant field amplification and resistive wall mode destabilization. The measured decrease of the plasma toroidal angular momentum profile is compared to calculations

Theory comparison and numerical benchmarking on neoclassical toroidal viscosity torque

Physics of Plasmas, 2014
Systematic comparison and numerical benchmarking have been successfully carried out among three different approaches of neoclassical toroidal viscosity (NTV) theory and the corresponding codes: IPEC-PENT is developed based on the combined NTV theory but without geometric simplifications [Park et al., Phys. Rev. Lett.

Neoclassical toroidal viscosity in perturbed equilibria with general tokamak geometry

Physics of Plasmas, 2013
This paper presents a calculation of neoclassical toroidal viscous torque independent of large-aspect-ratio expansions across kinetic regimes. The Perturbed Equilibrium Nonambipolar Transport (PENT) code was developed for this purpose, and is compared to previous combined regime models as well as regime specific limits and a drift kinetic δf guiding ...

A Model for the Neoclassical Toroidal Viscosity Effect on Edge Plasma Toroidal Rotation

Contributions To Plasma Physics, 2013
AbstractA semianalytic expression for the edge plasma angular toroidal rotation frequency that includes the neoclassical toroidal viscosity braking influence is obtained. Based on the model presented in a previous paper [I.G. Miron, Contrib. Plasma Phys.

Modelling of the neoclassical toroidal plasma viscosity torque in tokamaks

open access: yesNuclear Fusion, 2011
Neoclassical toroidal plasma viscosity (NTV) torque induced by non-axisymmetric magnetic perturbation in the collisionless regimes in tokamaks is modelled by solving the bounce-averaged drift kinetic equation numerically. The detailed comparison between the numerical and the analytic solutions of NTV is discussed in this paper.

Neoclassical viscosity effects on resistive magnetohydrodynamic modes in toroidal geometry

Physics of Fluids B, 1992
The flux-surface-averaged linearized resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) boundary-layer equations including the compressibility, diamagnetic drift, and neoclassical viscosity terms are derived in toroidal geometry. These equations describe the resistive layer dynamics of resistive MHD modes over the collisionality regime between the banana plateau and ...
