Isoprostanes in fetal and neonatal health and disease
Free Radical Biology and Medicine, 2010Isoprostanes are prostaglandin-like bioactive molecules generated via nonenzymatic peroxidation of lipid membrane-derived arachidonic acid by free radicals and reactive oxygen species. Their cognate receptors, biological actions, and signaling pathways are poorly understood. Aside from being sensitive and specific biomarkers of oxidative stress, E- and

Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice, 2018
Although most veterinarians have been caring for neonates successfully for several years, it is often good to review our methods and aim to incorporate new practices that will increase survivability, especially of the weaker neonates. These tips are easy to incorporate and do not require radical change by the doctors or staff.

The neonatal bowel microbiome in health and infection
Current Opinion in Infectious Diseases, 2014In newborns, interactions between the host and the microbiome operate synergistically, modulating host immune function and shaping the microbiome. Next generation molecular sequencing methodologies in tandem with modeling complex communities allow insights into the role of the microbiome in health and disease states. Infection-related disease states in

The Importance of Colostrum to the Health of the Neonatal Calf
Veterinary Clinics of North America: Food Animal Practice, 1994Colostrum feeding is the means by which newborn calves acquire passive immunity to infectious agents. The ability of the newborn calf to absorb colostral antibodies is limited to the first few hours of life. In most cases, natural suckling from the dam is the best method for beef-breed calves to obtain optimum passive immune protection, but in some ...

Why and how to invest in neonatal health
Seminars in Fetal and Neonatal Medicine, 2006The proportion of neonatal deaths in children has significantly increased, comprising at present almost 40% of all the nearly 11 million deaths of children under the age of five. In order to further reduce child mortality, substantial prompt attention to and reductions in neonatal mortality and morbidity are necessary.

Anesthesia of the Equine Neonate in Health and Disease
Veterinary Clinics of North America: Equine Practice, 2015Anesthetizing the neonatal foal presents significant challenges as a result of physiologic differences from the adult equine. This article gives the reader an overview of these differences and the impact they have on anesthetic drug selection, monitoring, and support of the equine neonate.
